DOOR CHECK.
No. 443,262. Patented Dec. 23, 1890.
ATTORNEY.
THE NORRIS ravens co., wmqumm, wAsmNGYu UNITED I STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN II. SHERRY AND JENNIE SHERRY, OF CANTON, OHIO.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,262, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed September 8,1890. Serial No. 364,270. (No model.)
T0 coZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatwe, JOHN II. SHERRY and JENNIE SHERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the check properly attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a view show ing the back of the sliding housing. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detached view of the fixed plate. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the housing. Fig. (3 is a transverse section through line :1: 50, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detached view of the pawl.
The present invention has relation to doorchecks; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the fixed plate, which may be of any desired form, reference being had to properly attaching the different parts to said plate. For the purpose of holding the housing B to the plate A the flanges (t are provided, which flanges are located substantially as illus-' trated in the drawings, and are bent or curved so as embrace the housing B, as illustrated in Fig. 6. To the housing B is pivotally attached the pawl O by means of. the pin 1). The pawl O is for the purpose of engaging the notches c and securely holding the housingB at an y desired point of adjustment within the limits of its movements.
Within the housingB is located the helical spring D, which spring is confined by means of the post or pin d and the pawl O. The post or pin d is fixed to the plate A. The top or upper end of the spring D bears against the bottom or under side of the pawl G, and is so adjusted that said spring D will elevate the outer end of said pawl, thereby engaging the inner end of the pawl O with one of the notches c.
To the bottom or lower end of the housing B is securely attached the holding-block E, which block maybe made of rubber or other suitable material, and its bottom notched, so as to better hold a door at any desired point.
In use, when it is desired to check or hold a door, the housing B is pressed downward by placing the foot upon the flange F, thereby seating the holding-block against a floor or carpet. It will be understood that as the housing B is pressed or forced downward the spring I) will be compressed and act upon the pawl O, which will cause the pawl to engage the notches c as it is carried downward by the housing B. \Vhen itis desired to release the door, the outer end of the pawl O is pressed downward, thereby elevating the inner end of said pawl and disengaging it from the notches 0, when the spring D is free to expand and elevate the housing B, together with the holding-block E.
For the purpose of providing a butter the rubber II is attached to the housing B and extends a short distance beyond the flange F, as illustrated in the drawings. It will be understood that, if desired, the plate A and the housing B may be recessed into the door.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent, is
In a door-cheek, the combination, with the fixed notched plate A, having the flanges a and the pin (1, and the sliding housing 15, carrying the pawl O and the holding-block E, of the spring D, engaging the pin (1 at one end and the pawl O at the other in such manner that said pawl is normally held in engagement with the notches c, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. SHERRY. JENNIE SHERRY.
