SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,007, dated'December 16, 1890.

Be it known that I, ELISHA L. REYNOLDS, of Marysville, county of Union, State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Bill- Holding File and Account- Book, which I call a Petty Led ger and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a device for holding letters, bill-files, individual accounts, and other memorandums, in connection with a series of indexed leaves, so that they can be temporarily secured and bound and at the same time easily withdrawn in mass for reference, examination, and other purposes, these results being accomplished by the followingdescribed means.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrative of my said invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the whole device. Fig;

2 is a plan view of the base or bottom with the puncturing-wires and indexed leaves removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 2 cut at .the line a b, showing a side elevation of one of the complete filing devices with a portion of an actuating-spring attached.

In the drawings, G represents the base (which may be made of wood, metal, or any hard substance) for holding the operative parts, and which is provided with a groove for the insertion of the metal strip or accountholder F.

D D are two vertical puncturingwires connected at their base with the removable metal strip F and forming a connection at the tops with bent and swinging transfer-Wires B O.

F is a metal strip carrying the vertical Wires D D, designed for the purpose of holding the indexed alphabet leaves K and inclosed accounts and providing for their removal bodily and complete separation from the base G, the object of which separation of the two parts being to reduce the dimensions of the ledger feature so as to occupy the smallest space possible when filed away in safes and vaults.

wire spring I-l', attached to the base G, the said horizontal wires being attached to the transfer swinging wires A A, so that by moving the wire B toward wire 0 the halfcircles formed by them are separated from the wires D D, and thus giving free access to all accounts filed within the removable ledger part. By the use of said screw passing through the two burrs E E, attached to the two horizontal wires, control is given over the two bent swinging wires B O, by which their points are made to fit in alignment with the points of vertical Wires D D.

-L is a loose cover ortop for the indexed leaves, which is arranged to swing over the transfer-wires and out of the way to allow of the placing and removal of the papers filed or to be filed. 1

M is a cap or housing for covering and protecting the mechanism for adjusting and operating the transfer-Wires B C from dust or dirt, but which may be dispensed with, if desired, although I prefer to use it for the purpose stated.

The operation of my device is as follows: First, the wire 13 is taken hold of and moved toward thezwire O, by which, owing to their being connected at their base, both wires are swung aside and disconnected from the puncturing-Wires D D, thereby leaving a clear and unobstructed space for the iinpalement and filing of papers upon the same and intermediatelybetween the index-a1 phabet leaves, and then by giving a slight push to the wire 0 in the opposite direction both wires, through the influence of the spring H, are brought immediately and automatically into their closed or normal position. Second, in filing papers, or where a particular paper is wanted, the top or cover L is thrown back, and. the particular paper or account needed can be found through the medium of the alphabet-index and removed without any separation of the parts; but when it becomes desirable to make a general examination of the papers filed then they can be detached bodily from the base and operating mechanism by means of the removable strip F.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and for'which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
