To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK W. HITOHER, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasting Pinchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of pinchers, partially broken away to show my improvement with greater clearness. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modification.

As is well known to those skilled in the art, the hammer of a pair of lasting-pinchers serves as the fulcrum when the pinchers are used as a lever in drawing the upper into place. In some cases it is desirable that this hammer head or fulcrum should be nearer the bite of the pinchers than in other cases, and it is thus desirable to have the hammer-head so constructed that it may be shifted or adjusted relatively to the bite of the pinchers. A pair of lasting-pinchers having such an adjustable hammer-head is not broadly new; but those hitherto made, so far as known to me, are objectionable, in that the method of securing the hammer-head in order to gain this adj ustmenthas necessitated a number of parts which are of comparatively costly construction, which are liable to loosen when the hammer is used as a hammer, and the construction of the hammer-head has been such as to weaken it. To avoid these objections is the chief object of my present invention, which is hereinafter more fully described, and which will be readily understood from the following description, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings.

The under jaw of the pinchers is shown at A, and is so shaped in front-of the pivot 11 of the pinchers as to afford a seat for the hammer between the pivot Z) and the bite of the pinchers. This portion of the jaw to which the hammer is secured is slotted, as shown at c, with a lengthwise slot to receive the shank (Z of the hammer head. The slot has parallel sides and end walls, and is adapted to receive a shank, such as cl, closely fitting said slot laterally, and which is square or rectan- The shank cl is pref- 5o the shank d, and which thus serves to hold the ham mer-head securely in a given position in the slot 0.

The upper jaw g of the pinchers is preferably arched upwardly, as shown, to afford a suitable space for the nut and for a wrench to tighten or loosen the nut. By this construction the hammer-head has a firm bearing against the lower side of the jaw A, and may be readily adjusted toward or from the bite of the pinchers whenever desired. By making the shank d rectangular in cross-section and increasing its size the liability of the hammer-heads breaking off at the point where it joins the shank is reduced to a minimum, and a very strong, easilyadj usted, and cheaply-made pinchers with an adjustable hammerhead is obtained.

As will be obvious, the construction may be v modified, as shown in Fig. 2, without essentially changing the character of my invention. In this modification the shank d is not integral with the hammer-head, but consists of a headed bolt having screw-threads at its lower end, which are received in a threaded hole or recess in the top of the hammer-head, and onto which the hammer-head may be screwed by either turning the hammer-head if the bolt d is rectangular in cross-section, or by turning the bolt if the bolt is circular in cross-section.

\Vhat I claim is- 1. A pair of lasting-pinchers having a lower j awA, provided with a slot clengthwise thereof and between the pivot of the pinchers and the bite of the same, said slot having end walls, as shown, a ham mer-head'secured to said lower jaw by means of a bolt or shank passing through said slot and filling the same laterally, and said pinchers having a space between the slotted lower jaw A and the upper jaw g to receive the top of the said shank, substantially as shown and described.
