J. K. PHILLIPS. FOOT BEST FOR USE IN SHOE STORES.
No. 442,781. Patented Dec. 16. 1890.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES JOHN KNOX PHILLIPS, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEWV JERSEY.
FOOT-REST FOR USE IN SHOE-STORES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,781, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed July 22, 1890. Serial No. 359,499. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN KNOX PHILLIPS, of South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Foot-Rest for Use in ShoeStores, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to foot-rests especially designed for use in shoe-stores in the fitting on of shoes; and the object of the invention is to improve this class of foot-rests by increasing their efiiciency while promoting economy of space.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a foot-rest constructed in accordance with my invention, the sliding knee-rest for the use of a salesman being shown in the outer position; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional elevation thereof, the knee-rest being shown in full lines in the inner position and in dotted lines in the outer position.
The top of the foot-rest A is made to taper downwardly toward the front, and at the front end the said inclined top is suitably cushioned or upholstered, as at a, which cushioned surface affords a desirable support for the feet of a purchaser. The remaining portion of the top surface in the rear of the cushion 6!, is left plain, as at (0, whereby it is adapted for the reception of any suitable advertising announcement, which latter will be plainly visible to the purchaser. The front side or end a of the foot-restis also preferably made suitable for receiving an advertisement, as shown. I
In connection with the foot-rest A, I arrange a sliding knee-rest B for use by the salesman. The knee-rest Bis fitted within the foot-rest in rearwardly-inclined guide-grooves b b, and is movable outward through an opening a in the rear of the said foot-rest to a position clearly shown in Fig. l and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Thus the knee-rest, when not required for use, may be moved into the foot-rest, and thus will not offer an obstruc tion in the passage-ways of the store, and when needed for use it may be quickly and readily moved to the outer position.
The knee-rest is preferably provided with a cushion or upholstering B, and it is also provided with a suitable stop I) for engaging the rod 12 extending across the rear open end of the foot-rest to limit its outward movement.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a foot-rest A, having an inclined top and open at its rear high end, grooves 17 in the inner faces of its side walls inclined upward from the said open end, a cross-rod connecting the sides at said open end below the grooves, the sliding section B, the ends of which enter said grooves, and a stop I) on the lower side of the sliding section, at its inner end, to engage the said rod and prevent the said section B from being entirely withdrawn, substantially as set forth.
JOHN KNOX PHILLIPS.
