To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. ENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to corkscrews, and the object is to provide a device of this class that will simply and expeditously extract the cork from a bottle; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view in vertical section of the upper portion of the improved device, showing the same secured to the lower surface of the top of a bar, counter, or other support. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of one side of the portion of the device in which the cork-extracting mechanism is located. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional viewtaken on .the line so so of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a similar View taken on theline y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a transverse sectional view taken 011 the line .2 z of Fig. 1, looking upward.
The letter A indicates a tubular casing of metal or other suitable material secured to'or formed with a bracket B at one side near its upper end, the said bracket being formed with apertures through which may be passed screws or other fastening devices, by means of which it may be attached to the under side of a counter or bar, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings. \Vithin the upper portion ofthe tubular casing is located a reciprocating plunger C, which is slotted longi tudinally between its ends, and within the slot, near the ends thereof, are located antifriction rollers D, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The upper portion of the tubular casing is provided with longitudinal slots corresponding with the slot in the plunger, and through the slots in the plunger and the casing extends a lever E, one end of which is fulcrumed to a stud F on the bracket, the other end being provided with ahandle G, by means of which it may be manipulated. The said lever passes between the anti-friction rollers above mentioned, and bears against the same during its operation in order to reciprocate the plunger with as little friction as possible. The lower portion of the casing A is enlarged,and is formed with an internal chamber H, which is rectangular in cross-section, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The lower end of the plungeris provided with a short boss I, which is externally screwthreaded and provided with an internal recess, within which sets the cylindrical head K of the shank L of the corkscrew. The said head is confined within said recess by means of an internally-threaded cap M, secured to the boss, the cap being provided with a central opening through which the shank of the corkscrew passes, so as to turn freely at the proper time. The shank of the corkscrew is screw-threaded externally, and extends throughan internallythreaded central aperture in a reciprocating nut N, which is rectangular in shape to fit the rectangular chamber in the casing A, in which it slides. The shank below the nut N is provided with a fixed or adjustable nut orcollar P, and below the said nut or collar is formed the screwblade R of the corkscrew.
S indicates a screw-plug secured in the lower end of the enlarged portion of the easing A, the said nut being provided with a central opening through which the blade of the corkscrew passes. The upper face of the plug is cut away atits edge, so as to permit the reciprocating nut to have a fair hearing against it when down. 7
The tubular casing is formed with a lower extension T, having at its extremity a truncated conical collar U, the upper face of which is inclined or beveled,as indicated by the letter V, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
The interior of the collar is hushed with leather or similar material to'form an elastic seat for the mouth of the bottle from which the cork is to be extracted.
It will be seen that as constructed the device is simple and eifective, and can be manipulated with one hand of the operator to expeditiously extract the cork from aibottle. Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the tubular slotted casing, the slotted securing-bracket, and a slotted plunger carrying anti-friction rollers, of the hand-leverfulcrumed to the bracket and passed through the slots in the casin g and plunger between the anti-friction rollers, the corkscrew-shaft having a threaded shank 'swiveled at its upper-end to the plunger, the

2.
