CORKlNG-MACHINE..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,760, dated Octobe1'23, 1888.
Application filed January 25,1888. Serial No. 261,858. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that l, GERRIT NORTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gorkiiig-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to au improved machine for coi-king bottles, jars, and other vessels having mouths of different sizes; and the invention consist-s of a corking machine comprising an upright supporting-frame, a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a lever fulcrumed to the frame and pivoted to the plungeru'od, said lever being provided with two anti-frietion rollers, a vertically reciprocating corkpressing tube supported 0n a ring shaped bracket guided in ways of the frame, a lever pivoted to said bracket and lulcrumed to the supporting-frame, said lever being provided with anti' friction rollers, and a weight-ed camlever fuit-ruined to the frame and operating a cam provided with projecting toes and intermediate arcshaped portions by which the plunger and cork-pressing tube are operated at the proper time, so as to force the cork into the mouth of the bottle or jar and retain the latter by a tixed guardplate below the corkpressing tube, as will appear more fully here- 1nafter,and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved corkiugmachine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ol the upper part of the same, showing the working parts on a larger scale. Figs. 3 and 4 are a horizont-al section of the bottle-guard on line x w, Fig. 2, and a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 5 is a vertical central section ot' a cork-pressing tube for a large-mouthed bottle or jar. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents au up right supporti n g-frame, ol'east metal or other suitable material, which is provided at its upper part with three fulcra, a a a2, which are arranged vertically below each other.
A weighted operatinglever, B, and a cam, C, are keyed to the middle fulcrum, a2, the cam C being provided with three projections or toes, b b bt, and intermediate arc-shaped steadying portions d d' d2, which serve to impart motion to the different operating parts ol the machine.A
To the upper fulcruin, a, is applied a lever, l), which is pivoted by its slotted outer end to the upper end of the plunger-rod E,which is guided in a fixed sleeve, c, of the frame A. The plunger lever D is provided with two anti-friction rollers, f f, one at each side ofthe fulerum a, which are engaged, respectively, by
vthe toes b b' and steadying portion d, according as the plunger is lowered or raised by the action ofthe cam C.
Vertically below and in line with the axis of the plunger E is arranged a conical co rk-p ressing tube, F, which is supported in a ringshaped bracket, F, that is made integral with a grooved slide-piece, F2, which is guided on a fixed dovetailshaped rail, g, of the frame A and pivoted to a lever, G, that is applied to the lower fulcrum, e', and provided like the lever D with two anti-friction rollers, g' g2, one at each side of the fulcrum a', that are acted upon by the toes b2 and the arc-shaped steadying portions d d'z of the cam O, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, according as the operatinglever B is raised or lowered. The conical cork-press ing tube F is provided at its lower end with a tubular extension, f', which projects through an opening of a stationary guard'platc, H, that is attached to the frame A, below the slidepiece F2. For corking vessels having mouths of different sizes, different sizes of cork-pressing tubes are used, which tubes are inserted into the ring-shaped bracket F and secured thereto by a suitable set-screw, f2, or other fastening device.
Cork pressing tubes F, having different sizes of interior openings, may be used in connection with the ring-bracket F', as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, according to the mouths of the bottles or jars to be corked. The guardplate H is provided with a ring-shaped opening of sufficient size for the passage of the tubular extensions f of the different cork-pressing tubes F. The guardplate H is further provided at its under side with an interchangeable plate, H', the opening of which corresponds to the size of the extension-tube f', said plate H being guided in ways h of the guardplate, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
For operating my improved corking-ma IOO chine, the bottle orjar to be corked is placed below the stationary guard H, the tubular lower end of the cork-guiding tube being inserted into the mouth of the bottle or jar, as shown in Fig. 1. The cork is then placed into the conically-aring upper portion ofthe tube F. The operating-lever B is then lowered by hand or steam power, which produces first the lowering of the plunger by the action of the toes b b of the cam O on the anti-friction rollers f f of the plunger-lever, so that the cork is-foreed downwardly through the tubular extension f of the tube F into the mouth of the bottle or jar. Simultaneously with this motion the cork-pressing tube F and its bracket F/ are raised by the action of the toe b2 of the cam C on the fulcrumed lever of the bracket F', and the latter thereby moved away from the mouth of the bottle or jar as the cork is forced in the same, until the tubular extension f clears entirely the mouth of the bottle and the cork in the same, which is thus transferred to the mouth of the bottle or jar. By lifting the operating-lever the plunger and corkpressing tube are returned by the action of the cam and lever into their normal positions, being then ready for the next corking action, and so on.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a vertically-guided cork-pressing tube having tubular extension, a stationary guard-plate below said tube, and means for reciprocating the plunger and cork-pressing tube, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a vertically-reciprocating cork-pressing tube, a ring-shaped and guided bracket for said tube, a stationary guard-plate below said tube, fulcrumed levers pivoted, respectively, to the plunger-rod and the slidepiece of the bracket, an operating-lever fulcrumed to the supporting-frame, and a cam keyed to the fulcrum of the operating-lever and provided with toes and steadying portions for actuating theplunger and cork-pressing tube, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a cork-pressing tube having a tubular extension, a vertically-reciprocating bracketring supporting the cork-pressing tube, a stationary guard-plate located below said tube and provided with an opening for said extension, fulcrumed levers pivoted to the plunger-rod and bracket, an operating-lever, and a cam keyed to the fulcrum of said operating-lever, said cam actuating the plunger and cork-pressing tube, substantially as set forth. v
4. The combination of a supporting-frame, a cork-pressing tube, a ring shaped bracket for supporting the cork-pressing tube, aslidepiece for said bracket guided on the supporting-frame, a fulcrumed lever pivoted to said slide-piece, and an operating-lever and a cam keyed to the fulcrum ofthe operatinglever and provided with a projecting toe and arc-shaped steadying portions at each side of said toc, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a vertically reciprocating cork-pressing tube having a tubular extension, means for actuating the plunger and tube, and a stationary guard-plate below said cork-pressing tube, said guard-plate having an opening and an interchangeable plate guided in ways of the guard-plate, substantially as set forth.
6. In a corking-machine, astationary guardplate having an opening, and a detachable plate having an opening corresponding in size to the lower end of the eorking-tube, said detachable plate being guided in ways of the stationary plate, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of a vertically-reciprocating plunger, a corkpressing tube, a vertically-reciprocating bracket-ring for said tube, means for fastening the cork-pressing tube to the bracket-ring, and a stationary guard-plate below the cork-pressing tube, the guard-plate being provided with a detachable plate guided in ways of the guard-plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
