BLOW PIPE.
No. 442,194. Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
QHOMIMZW NlTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEROY M. MATHEWS, OF LlUvRENCE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE \YILMING- TON DENTAL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN S Y'LVANIA.
BLOW-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,194, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1890. Serial No. 356,056. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, LEROY M. MATHEWS, of Lawrence, Douglas county, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 5 ments in Blow-Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to certain new and x useful improvements in blow-pipes; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter specified and claimed.
My object is to provide a blow-pipe which I can be employed eitherin connection with an alcohol-lamp or by securing thereto a gassupply tube, and it is so constructed that when used with gas the power and size of the jet may be controlled, as will be readily understood from the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blow pipe with the gas and mouth tubes attached.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the gas-tube removed. Fig. 8 is a vertical central sectional view. Fig. 4: is a section on line 00 a: of Fig. 2.
A represents a blow-pipe consisting of the 0 casing B, provided with the downwardly-extending screw-threaded portion 1), upon which is secured thehandle O. The casing B is provided with the vertical and horizontal passages D and G. Secured on the vertical passage is the pipe D, having an annular lip (Z, over which the lower end of the gas-connect ing tube E is secured. The projections F and f, integral with the casing B, extend rearwardly and forwardly, respectively, from the 40 upper surface of the same, the object of which will be hereinafter specified.
The cylindrical casings II and I are journaled to allow a revoluble movement in the horizontal passageway of the casing B. The
casing ll is provided 011 its outer end with the annular flange or shoulder 72., from which projects laterally the thumb-piece h. Coiled round the casing H is the spring K, having one end secured in an opening in the flange or shoulder 71. and the opposite end coiled round and engaging the forward projection f of the casing B. The casing I is provided with the upwardly-extending ear 1', through which operates the thumb-screw J, the inner end of the same bearing against the stop or projection F of the casing B. A pipe or tube L is secured rigidly to the inner surfaces of the casings H and 1, extending, as illustrated, through them and provided on its outer end with the exterior screw-threads Z, upon which is adjustably secured the sleeve or casing M. Secured preferably to the inner surface of the pipe or tube L (but which may be a decreased extension of the said pipe) is the collar N, provided on its rear end with the annular flange or lip 71, over which is secured one end of the air-connecting tube 0, to the opposite end of which is secured the mouth-piece P, or which may engage with a bellows in any suitable manner, as desired. The pipe L is provided with the slot Z, which in its normal position is slightly in alignment with the passage-way D, as shown in Fig. 3. The air-conducting pipe Q, considerably smaller in diameter than the passage-way of the pipe L, is 7 5 secured therein at its front end by soldering or any other suitable manner, and in the collar N at its rear end. A nozzle q is screwed upon the forward end of the air-conducting pipe Q.
In operation the blow-pipe is arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 when used in connection with gas. The adjustable sleeve M is moved forward on the pipe L until it is flush with or beyond the end of the nozzle q, or the sleeve may remain stationary and the nozzle beremoved, as desired. The gas being turned on passes through the tube E, pipe D, and opening Z, surrounding the tube Q, and escaping at the forward open end, to which a lighted match is applied. The flame is small and weak owing to the small quantity of gas passing through the opening Z, but may be increased at will by operating the thumbscrew J, which impinges against the stop F, causing the sleeve or casing I to revolve, and this having the pipe L secured rigidly to its inner surface causes the slot to revolve until the amount of gas needed to increase the flame to the desired intensity is obtained. The flame may also be increased at will by depressing the thumb-piece h of the casing H, which operates the slot in the manner described, but Which on removing the pressure returns to its normal position by the contraction of the spring K,which is secured at either end, as described.
The object in having the sleeve advanced or the nozzle removed is to allow the full force of the air from the mouth or bellows to play upon the flame. \Vhen used in co11- nection with alcohol-lamps, the tube E is removed and the sleeve M moved rearwardly upon the pipe L or removed entirely, if desired, so as to allow the free and uninterrupted egress of air.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is-
1. In abloW-pipe, the combination, with the casing B, having passages D and G, of the casings H and I, located in either end of said casing B, the pipe L, having a slot. and resting in the bores of casings H and I, the tube D, secured in passage D, and an air-conducting pipe within the pipe L, substantially as described.
2. In a blow-pipe, thecombiuatiou, with the casing B, having passages D and G, of the casings H and I, located in either end of said casing B, the tube D, secured in passage D, the pipe L, having a slot and resting in the bores of casings H and I, the casing II having a thumb-piece h, and a spring K, surrounding the casing H, substantially as described.
3. In a blow-pipe, the combination, with the casing B, having passages D and G, of the casings H and I, located in either end of said casing B, the tube D, secured in passage D, and the pipe L, having a slot and resting in the bores of casings II and I, the casing I'I- having the thumb-piece h, and the casing I the upwardly-extending ear f, through which operates the thumb-screw J, substantially as set forth.
at. In abloW-pipe, the combination, with the casing B, having the passages D and G, of the casings H and I, located in either end of said casing B, the tube D, secured in passage D, the pipe L, having a slot and resting in the bores of casings H and I, and an adjustable sleeve M on said pipe L, substantially as described.
5. In a blow-pipe, a casing B, having the passages D and G, the casings H and I, 10'- cated in either end of said casing B, the tube D, secured in passage D, the pipe L, having a slot Z and resting in the bores of casings H and I, a handle 0, and a screw-threaded portion b on casing B, entering said handle, as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEROY M. MATI-IElVS.
