IVHNERS CANDLESTICK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,186, dated December 9, 1890.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID Bren JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco,in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Gandlesticks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in eandlesticks particularly adapted for use by miners, the object of the invention being to simplify, perfect, and complete the construction of the candle-holding devices used in mines and other similar localities; and the invention consists, essentially, in the construetion, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the annexed drawings,illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved miners candlestick, the parts being shown unelosed and in position for use. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, showing the parts closed or shut, so as to make the device conveniently portable.

In carrying my invention into practical effect I first take a strip of metal of suitable thickness and width and bend it back upon itself so that it has two arms Aand A which lie alongside of each other, and so that there may be formed the loop A, having a generally circular form. The arm A is looped at A to provide a recess in which to insert the candle. The user of the device can conveniently hold the same by grasping the handle- .loop A B denotes an arm having a curved end b. This arm is pivoted between the arm A and its inturned end by means of a pivot or other suitable device a. Thus it will be seen that the hooked arm B may be moved upon its pivot so as to lie between the arms A and A with its hooked end I) situated within the loop A, or said hooked arm B maybe moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, where it is at right angles to the direction of the arm A. This hook is used for the purpose of suspending the candlestick when it is desired to support it in this way, although it can be supported in other ways.

0 denotes an arm having a pointed end 0, a sharpened edge e, and a notch 0 This arm 0 is pivoted to the end of the arm A and is easily movable upon its pivot, so that it may be located in the extended position indicated in Fig. 1 or in the closed position shown in Fig. 2, in which latter position the arm 0 lies between the arm A and the hooked arm 13, its pointed end being within the handle-loop A. The pivoted end of the arm 0 is provided with an offset lug d, which, when the arm is in the extended position, abuts against the under side of the arm A and thus prevents the arm 0 from being moved too far upon its pivot.

The candle, as I have already stated, will be located within the loop A and will be securely held therein. The pointed arm C or the hooked arm B may either be used for the purpose of supporting the candlestick. hen the pointed arm is used, its pointed end will be driven into the wall. Vhen the hooked arm is used, the hooked end thereof will be hung upon some suitable object. The sharp edge of the arm 0 is used for the purpose of cutting fuse, and the notch c is used for the purpose of fastening the cap on the fuse.

Having the s described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the two spring-arms and the end loop, one of said arms having a candle-receiving loop, the pointed arm having the sharpened edge and a notch and an offset lug, said arm being pivoted to that arm which has the candle-loop and the hooked arm pivoted between the other of the two arms and its inturned end, as specified.

2. The combination, with the parallel spring-arms and end loop, one of said arms having a candle-100p, of the pointed arm 0, having lug d, and the arm B,pivoted between having the end 0, the sharp edge e, and the arm A and its inturned end,' as described.
