Description

U TED JAMES ROWE, F TRIANALABAMA.
CIRCULAR RAILWAY ANI) CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4:42,` dated October. 28, 1837.l
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it' known that I, JAMES Rowia, of Triana, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented 'a new and useful circular railroad and car for transporting;
passengers, burdens, and for all other useful purposes to which saidimprovement may be applied, which is described as follows, ref-` erence being had to!v the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification. y
There is provided a proper foundation of the requisite size and strength for the pur pose intended, which is marked-.A in the annexed drawing. On this foundation is constructed a circular rail way B, of any given radius.l On this circular rail-way is made.
to travel around on grooved wheels C a circular car, D, provided on the top with any convenient number of seats, E, 'for passengers, or receptacles for burdens.y The propelling power as here represented, consists of pulleys l, 2, 3, 4, and a band F passing around the circular car in a groove 'formed in the periphery thereof. One of the pul`l leys No. l, is turned by a crank .Gr on the.
end of anaxle I-I which extends`v to the center of the circular track; on the endof vwhich, there is a. pinion I working into another pinion J, on the end of a parallel shaft K, passing through the center rof the opposite pulley, causing them to move together.
The car may be propelledby a circular raclr'and pinion. applied on one side only, or both. Instead of havingy the grooved wheels attached to the circular car they may be stationed on an exact circle at regular intervals and the car and rail united and laid on them and driven as before. The propelling power may be steam, horse, or otherwise. i
This improved circular rail road is designed for the exercise and pleasure grounds of cities, towns, villages, and all places of public resort.
t To an excavator (invented by your peti-r u tioner) as the agent by which the earth ex-v cavatedis conveyed and deposited to thev rightor leftfor tending and serving in all practical positions.
Among the advantages to be derivedbyy.
the use of the before described circular rail n roadv over all others' are, v
driven from' two opposite ing a balance of motion.
2. y.Accidents are prevented from the impossibility ofthe'carruiining off the track. 3. The car being* drivenby. a. chain orbelt y 1. The car is continuous around the whole.
circle, firmly united in all Vits parts vand I points, thus form'- consequently employs local instead offloo-` motive power.
4.` The car being'continuous in acircle will accommodate seats all aroundv and afford convenience for a great number of passengersto exercise and ride at'the same time: or a. greatquantity of burden may thus be conveyed. The circular car may be propelled by giving motion to two upright shafts by means of bevel gearing' and a cross band passing` around the car and a pulley on the upper end of each upright shaft.
The invention claimed by me the said JamesRowe and which I desire tosecure'by Letters Patent consistsl. In the combination of the single track and continuous car.
2. -Driving by bland vor belt without a common center and by a balance ofmotion.
3. The application of local power to 'pro-"1 pelling a circular calr for accommodating passengers with the highest speed and yet p l,
entirely safe and free from all possible danger and also for conveying' burdens.
