Description
JEREMIAH MYERS,- OF A'IFTLIDEOR0, MASSACHUSETTS;
TURNABOUT Een nnrnnonnsz,
Specification of Letters Patent No. 189, dated May B, 183'?.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH MYERS, of
.Attleborot in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new `and useful Improvement in Turning-Tables for Locomotive-En 'nes und Care, called M ers Im roved ming-Table for Rail'- roa s, whi isA described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification. This improvement consists in formin a pit of an oblong' igureof any desire le length rounded at each end, having rails4 at the bottom extending from end to end, over which the carriage with the turnin table and locomotive or car moves, in s 'fting them from one track to another, in any part of the workshop, depot, or carri e house, or other place, where the pit may e formed ;the carriage being moved by a windlass, pulleys, and chains, or other power placed at'each4 end of the pit, or atteched7 to the carriage ;v-and in turning the table by means of e circular rack and pinion. A re resents the oblong) pit with circular ends. xl! the rails at the ottom ofthe pit- C the carriage; D windlass, ulleys, `an chain for moving the carriage ackward or forward; E parra'llel rails on the top 'of the carriage upon which the locomotive or car is run, when the turni table is not used- F circular rail upon w ichthe wheelsjoi the turning table move when this is used. G the turning table, or revolving circular platform; Hcircular rack on the under side of the turning table ;-I pinion working intothe circular racks Afor moving the turning table round with the locomotive or car thereon. J the rails on thetop of the turning table. Kl movable rails turning on hinges for joining the ends 'of the rails of the several tracks with those of the turnin table; L rails ofthe several tracks wit which the rails of the turning table are made to coincide as required in shifting the locomotive engines or cars from one to another; M 'slides or locks for 'the turning table to the sides of the pit and ecpin the rails parallel and in. a. vline .with each ot er.
\ The invention claimed by 4the subscriber and desired to-'be secured by Letters Patent consists in 7 Placing the rev lving cimular'rplatform .with the tracks,
Meredith villa sents that he orturning table upon a carriage movin on rolls :--1n Vmaking an oblong pit by w ich the locomotive en 'nes' or oars ma be run olf the turninte le. at rivht ang es from any part oft e pit, and from either end, obliquely as well as atrightenglee or otherwise, to Aany part of thework shop, depot, or carnage house, or other placer-and in the facility eiiorded from the above described form of the pit of clearing'the turning table 'from snow ice or other substances: likewise in placing'the locomotive engine or car upon a carriage running at right angles y which means the locomotive or car ma Abe run oif upon any other track paralle with the same.
A revolvin circular platform or turnin table is not c aimed; but only the method o turning it by the use and application of -a circular rack and inion turned by a crank.
Die claim-er.
