TOY.

SPECIFICATION fon-ning part of Letters Patent No. 441,720, dated December 2, 1890.

Application filed July 18.1890. Serial No. 359,174. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. TRIPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to that class of toys known as musical Whrligigs or buzzes; andthe objects of the invention are to provide an exceedingly cheap toy of the above class, said toy being adapted to be easily Inanufactured and when operated to make a musical sound.

With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified,- and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective of a buzz construct-ed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections, the former being taken through the series of radial openings and the latter through the sound-passages.

In practicing my invention 1 construct the buzz wholly of wood and of spherical shape, the same being turned in any convenient manner desired.

The sphere l is provided at intervals with a series of radially-disposed sound-openings 2, said series being arranged in the same line around the periphery-'or circumference of the indicate like A sphere and communicating at the center of yplate 5, having a reed 6.

A pair of perforations 7, arranged parallel to each other and at each side of the axial center of the sphere, is formed therein, and

through the same is passed the ends of the operating-cord 8, which ends are secured together.

In operation the buzz is operated in the usual manner-viz., by iirst twisting the cords at each side of the buzz, and then intermittingly tightening and loosening the same, so,

that the buzz is rapidly rotated in alternate directions. As the buzz revolves, the opening 3 causesa suction, anda current of air is constantly drawn through the single opening 3 and through the reed, which latter is thereby sounded and aifords amusement.

Iam aware that numerous devices of the above character have been heretofore invented;but they have all been so complicated in their construction as to render their cost too great for them to become popular. By my invention, however, by forming them of a sphere of wood, bored, as shown, the cost is greatly reduced, attractiveness increased, and none of the amusing qualities sacrificed.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is- As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed spherical wooden buzz provided with a series of radiating openings intersecting each other at the center of the sphere, a single radiating hole disposed at a right angle tothe series of openings and communicating therewith at their intersecting point, and opposite perforations located at diametricallyopposite sides of and extending parallel to the single opening, the sphere being provided at the outer end of the single opening with a dovetailed recess, a reed-plate slid therein and provided with beveled edges, and an endless operating-cord passed loosely through the parallel perforations, substantially as speciiied.
