UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MURRAY HINOKLEY SPEAR, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASS IGNOR, BY MES NE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE CARTER dc COMPANY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW
YORK.
COVER FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,114, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed August 5, 1889- Serial No, 319.796. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURRAY HINOKLEY SPEAR, manufacturer, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Charterhouse Buildings, in
the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Sales and other Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in [o the loose covers in which shop sales-books, pamphlets, catalogues, lists, and the like are frequently inserted to protect and improve the appearance of same. A common way of holding the book in the cover is by opening is same and inserting it under an elastic band secured at the top and bottom in the center portion or hinge of the cover, and a method which has been proposed in the case of shop sales-books is to provide the back of the book with a stiff flap of paperor card-board, which is inserted into a pocket in one of the sides of the cover. Both these and other arrangements of which I am aware, however, do not prevent the book from sliding out of the cover if it is hurriedly caught up by one side of same; and the present invention relates to means for obviating same by providing a reenforcing shoulder or ledge against which the back or stub of the book will abut and so 0 be prevented from falling out.
To clearly explain the nature of my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents my improvement ap- 3 5 plied to a shop sales-book which is held in a cover by the flap and pocket before referred to. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of the cover and ledge. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, on the line a: w of Fig. 1.
40 Fig. 4 represents my improvements applied to a shop sales-book which is held in the cover by a cord or elastic.
The cover A, which is of some stiff material, has the usual flexible hinge portion a,
and about centrally placed on this is the shoulder or ledge B, which may be made in a variety of ways; but I prefer a strip of metal bent into angle form, as shown, which is cemented, sewed, or otherwise held in the hinge portion of the book and covered with paper or fabric, if desired, while for convenience in removing the book portion 0 a recess Z2 is preferably made at some point on same. This re enforcing ledge is secured to the hinged portion of the cover along one of its flanges-the horizontal onewhile the oth erthe vertical oneis entirely free of the cover, so that the latter may lie flat, as shown in Fig. 3. The book portion O, as shown in the drawings, consists of a shop sales-book having a stub d and leaves which are adapted to be torn out when used. In Fig. 1 such book is shown as being held in the cover by a flap e of stout paper or card-board, which is inserted into a pocket f, formed in one of the sides of the cover, and after being slipped in this the stub of the book abuts against the ledge or shoulder B. In Fig. 4 a similar book portion is shown, but held in the cover by a cord or elastic g, which passes between the pages of the book in the usual way, the stub at the back abutting against the shoulder or ledge.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a loose cover for books, pamphlets, catalogues, and the like, having means for securing the book in same, of' a re-enforcing or abutting shoulder or ledge of angle form, one flange of which is secured to the cover and the other free therefrom, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a loose cover for books, pamphlets, catalogues, and the like, having means for securing the book in same, of a re-enforeing or abutting shoulder or ledge provided with a recess 1), substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MURRAY HINCKLEY SPEAR.
Witnesses:
PHILIP M. JUSTICE, ALLEN P. J ONES.
