Description
UNITED Sraras LOUIS C. RODIER, (JF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T() SAM- UEL NORRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-HOLDERS FOR BIT-STCKS.
Spcchcaijon forming part oi Letters Patent No. LILQPQZ dated August 30, 1864.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LOUIs G. Roman, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit Stocks or itis difficult, if not impossible, ,to use such implements for the want of space within which the crank of the holder is to be rotated.
ATo construct a bit-holder which can be oper- I. ated in contractedspaces-vl e., spaces which do not admit of complete revolutions of the holder-is the object of this invention; and I have accomplished this by combining withthe tool-socket a system ofratchets, whereby the tool may-be rotated continuously in one direction, although the vholder isivibrated` or oscillated according to the space aorded.
To enable others to make and use this invention, I shall now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In. the accompanying drawings, Figurel is an eleva-tion of a bit-stock made in accordance with this. my invention. Fig. 2 is anelevation of 'a part ot' the same detached and Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views of the ratchet-box dismembered, Fig. 3 being the Lipper part and Fig. @c the lower portion or the tool-socket of' the bit-stock.
' In the said figures. similar letters denote similar parts.
A is the tool-socket provided with a hole of a'c'iuadrangular or square'sectional area expanding toward the under side, and having a spring lever or catch, I3, pivoted at b, to be operated from the outside at a. The inter- Daily-projecting hook C, penetrating a corre- ;sponding recess in the tool shank, rmly locks it. This part of thebit-stock is similar in coustruction to others in. use, and the improvement subject of this patent tdoes notr'elate thereto. 0a top of this vsocket is tted a box which isprovided onv top and bottom with ratchet-teeth d d', arranged to operate in oppostte dircctions. Within this box there is a circular double ratchet plate, Gr, the teeth of which .mesh in with either the upper or lower ratchet-teeth of the box, operator. The double ratchet-plate is maintained in position with respect to theaxis of the implement by means of a spindle, S, projecting on top and bottom, so as to t corresponding orices-through the top and bottom part of said box. The upper spindle may be continued to the outside ofthe socket and may be shaped into a crank, or it may Yterminate in a shank, '.l, which in its turn may lit a socket formed in the lower end ofthe crank. The depth of the box is made to exceed the double ratchetplate by at least the depth of the teeth. The double ratchet-plate, which is fast on the spindle S, is thus capable of a limited-up-and-dcwn play within the box.
lhe operation of this device is as follows: Supposing the parts toI be adjusted for workthat is to say, the tool to be inserted in the socketA and the crank to be mounted on the shank T, and rotary motion to be imparted to the latter-fthe lower ratchet-teeth of the plate G will mesh in with the ratche'tiitceth d', and thus cause'the bit to partake of the movement of the cranklj It' the whole revolution cannot he completed for want ci' space surrounding the crank, ben the crank is oscillated or vibrated back and forth, every back movement causing the ratchetplate G. to. ride over the ratchet teeth d', but taking hold of the hitsockct to be carried forward by the advance or forward movement of the crank. In this way it will be understood oi' one or more teeth the bit will bc rotated continuously in one and the same direction. In order to withdraw the bit from after it shall have performed its work' in the wood it is, only necessary to draw the plate up in contact with the ratchet-teeth d on the upper part ofthe box D and to cause the ratchetteethxto bear with but slight pressure against it. In this wL y the rotary motion of the bit may be' reversed by continuing the same' vibratory action oi' the crank.
at the option of the` thickness of the that by vibratingthe lever or crank the distance of the length 2. In combination with van tool socket of otherwise ordinary or suitable construction,- the employment of al right and left hand ratchet-box, together withy a, circular double ratchet-plate, Y under the arrangement de scribed, lso that the said ratchet-plaie mayv be brought into Working Contact with either l'lgLlh U1' LU LUU 1611/7 bLlU 621:55 muy UU- In testimony whereof I have slgnerlmy name ,to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
