UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO E. NELsoN, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 280,849, dated July 10, 1883.
7 Application filed December 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. NELSON, of
Brockton, in the county of Plymouth, State of vertical transverse section, showing the gears;
Fig. 3, a plan view of the gears; Figs. 4 and 5, sectional views for reference; Fig. 6, a view of the rule detached; Fig. 7, a side elevation; Fig. 8, a sectional view, showing the gears, and also the coupling rod or clutch; Fig. 9, a plan view, showing the jaws of the chuck closed; Fig. 10, aview of the wrench; Fig. 11 a plan view, showing the jaws of the chuck opened or extended; Fig. 12, a view of someof the smaller parts detached, and Fig. 13 a view of the rule arranged'as a centering-gage.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
This invention relates to tool-stocks adapted to receive various tools or implements which may be detached or used independent of the common stock or handle, said stock being provided with a chuck, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the body or stock, which is provided with four radial and vertically-arranged flanges, B O D E, designed to receive and hold, respectively, the calipers G, level if, screw-driver J, and rule K, the calipers, rule, and screw-driver being secured in position and rendered detachable by the thumb-screws m, and the flange E, provided with the V-shaped notch 45. The rule is pro-'" vided at its upper end with two laterally-projecting short arms, a b, forming the slot d, for
receiving the screw by which it is secured in the body A, rendering it adapted for use as a wrench for certain kinds of light work. It may also be provided with a scale of inches and fractional parts thereof, if. desired, and also used as a centering-tool by securing it in a horizon- "and L interlocked.
by securing one or both of the arms 2 z in a vertical position, with their points at any de sired height from the bottom of the body. Two arms, f f, are, conjointly pivoted at Gin the body A, these arms being provided at their outer ends with sliding pivots j j, working in the slots i, thereby enabling thearms z to be reversed on the arms f, and used, as occasion may require, either as dividers orcalipers or as a surface-gage.
The level or glass t in the flange O is arranged vertically, but is adapted for use either vertically or horizontally, as desired, or according to the position in which the body A is placed. The screw-driver J may be readily detached, if desired; but the body A serves in most instances as a proper handle for the same, as it does for the calipers and square.
J ournaled vertically in the center of the body there is a rod, L, provided at its lower end with the horizontally-arranged miter-gear M, which intermeshes with four corresponding vertically-arranged miter-gears, 00, mounted 011 the inner ends of the horizontal screws ,0.
These screws each carry a chuck-jaw, q, as
best seen in Figs. 8, 9, and 11, the screws and jaws being arranged to work in proper bearings and ways provided for that purpose.
The body A is fitted with a nut, N, which is screwed into its upper end and bored or chainbered vertically to receive the upper end of the coupling-rod 0, this rod being detachably jointed to the rod L, as' shown at Z. The rod 0 is fitted with a coiled spring, n, which acts expansively on the boss to to keep the rods 0 The upper end, P, of the rod 0 is squared and fits a corresponding hole in the loose boss Q, which is used for turning the rod 0, and is covered with a cap, F, attached to the screw 17 and turning with the rod.
In the use of my improvement the chuck maybe operated through the rod L, gears M w, and screws 1; by means of the boss Q, which, when turned to the right or left, will cause the jaws q to close upon and hold any article placed between them, or open and release the same, as the case may be, in a manner which will be readily obvious without a more explicit description.
In case the chuck is employed for turning on or off nuts, or on work where a heavy strain has to be brought upon the body A, the wrench may be used, the inwardly'projecting studs being adapted to fit the notches 25, formed in the periphery of the horizontal flange Y on the upper part of the body. The wrench is also provided with a hexagonal hole, '1, at its outer end for turning the nut N.
e A screw-eye, 15, for attaching a plumb-cord, 18, is provided at the lower end of the body A, which may be detached when the plumb is not is use.
The methods in which the various implements embodied in the tool may be used to advantage will readily suggest themselves, and it is therefore deemed unneeesary to give them more fully.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is-- 1. A toolstock provided with a chuck at one end and with means for operating the same, said stock being constructed with longitudinal ribs provided with slots adapted to receive various tools, substantially as described.
2. A tool stock or chuck consisting of a tubular body provided with radially-sliding jaws at one end, a rotary rod within said body, provided with a slot at its upper end, mechanism connecting said rod with said jaws, a
shouldered coupling rod provided with a tongue adapted to project into said slot for coupling said rods, a spring for forcing said parts into connection with each other, and means for rotating said coupling-rod, substantially as described.
8. A tool stock or chuck consisting of the tubular body A, having the nut N at one end, the radially-sliding jaws g at its opposite end, the screws 11, provided with the miter-gears m at their inner ends and working in said jaws, the rotary rod L, slotted at one end, and provided at its opposite end with the miter-gear M, adapted to intermesh with the gears :20, the coupling-rod 0, provided with a tongue, 7, spring 91, and boss Q, all. constructed, com,- bined, and arranged to operate substantially as described.
4. A tool stock or chuck consisting of the tubular body A, having the chambered nut N at its upper end and the radially-sliding jaws (1 at its lower end, the screws 21, provided with the miter-gears a: at their inner ends and work ing in said jaws, the rotary rod L, slotted at one end, and provided at its opposite end with the miter-gear M, adapted to intermesh with the gears m, the squared coupling-rod 0, provi ded with a tongue, Z, the expansile spring 01, adapted to hold said rods in contact, the boss Q for turning the rods, and the cap F, substantially as described.
