Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. DURNING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HAR ESS-TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,306, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed February 15, 1890. Serial No. 340,512. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. BURNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Trimmings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a bridle-front so constructed as to admit of the insertion therein of the owners or makers name in such a way as to render the bridlefront both serviceable and ornamental.
The invention consists of the improved bridle-front and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, as hereinafter set forth, and finally pointed out in the claim.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a bridle-front, showing one form of my improvement. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a modified form of a strip or plate and of letters inserted therein, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line 00 of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views showing the construction of the letters.
In said drawings, Ct indicates the plate or strip to which the letters I) are secured, and 0 indicates end pieces, which may be of the same color as the strip a, or, if preferred, of a contrasting color. Said end pieces may be separate from the strip a and secured thereto and to the bridle-front, as shown in Fig. 1, or
they may be extensions or continuations of said strips a, as may be preferred. Said strip or plate CL, or that portion of it to which the letters are secured, may be either plain and the letters be nailed or riveted thereon, as indicated in Fig. 1, or it may be folded at the edges to form grooves d and the letters be inserted and held in said grooves, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, in which case the letters may be struck up from thin strips of metal, the margins e of which should be of one color and the letters I) of another, which maybe accomplished by japanning one or the other, as indicated in Fig. 5, the design being to arrange the letters so as to indicate the owners or makers name and at the same time make it ornamental.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a brow-band consisting of the brow-band proper, the plate or strip fitting in said brow-band and having its side edges bent upon itself to form channels, the letter-plates having their flat edges fitting in the channels formed by the bent side edges of the strip and engaged directly by the fiat overturned edges of said strip, and the end pieces secured to the browband proper and having their inner ends covering the outer ends of the strip and holding the letter-plates in position therein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of January, 1890.
THOMAS F. DURNIN G.
