OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,205, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed December 2, 1889- Serial No. 332,188- (No model.) I
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERNANDO B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oil-cans; and it consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective of an oil-can, illustrat ing my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective 0f clamp by which the vertical and horizontal wires are secured together; Fig. 3, aplan view of the clamp, showing the form before bending. Fig.4 is a vertical sectional view taken through the top portion of the can.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts in all of the figures of the accompanying drawings.
A represents a glass can of the form substantially as shown, having its bottom portion closed and its integral top portion provided with apertures B O, having upwardly-projected flanges D, about which the downwardlyprojected flanges E of the caps F and G are secured in the usual way. The cap F is secured with its flange E to the flange D encircling the aperture B. A cap J has a screw-threaded engagement with the top flange H of the cap F, by which provision the said cap J may be turned off for the purpose of filling the can. The central top portion of said cap J is slightly depressed, as shown in Fig 2, and central to said depression is formed a small aperture (Z, on which is placed a small spherical valve f, over which is placed a cage K, having in its top portion a vent-hole g. The cap G, which is secured to the flange D encircling the aperture (J, is also provided with an aperture h in its top, which is covered by a valve ,7, over which is provided a wire cage' 75, over and about which is secured the spout Z. After these caps have been secured in position to the can a bar Z is placed between them and has its ends secured to said caps, by which provision the caps are locked against displacement by twisting. 1 consider this an im portant point, for it is a well-known fact that cans of this character receive rough usage, and should the spout receive a knock the tendency would be to twist it, and thereby loosen it in its engagement with the can. In unscrewing the cap J from the cap F the bar Z prevents the cap F being twistedfrom the can should the said cap J bind.
About the upper portion of the can A is provided an outwardly-projected collar portion M, forminga neck portion 0' between the body portion of the can and the collar, about which neck and under the shoulderl is placed a metal band N, and about the bottom portion there is also provided a slight reduction in the size of the bottom portion of the can, forming a shoulder Z about which reduced portion is placed a metal band 0 wider than the reduced end portion of the can, the metal band projecting below the bottom of the can A to form a base and to protect the bottom portion of the glass body A and to hold said bottom from or above the floor or other place of rest.
The bottom band O and the top band N are connected by the vertical wires P. The central portion of said wires is secured by the encircling-band Q, which may be soldered to the vertical wires 1, or, if preferred, may be further secured by the use of the metal clamp R, having clamping-fingers m and n to embrace the wire and the central portion to embrace the wire Q, in which position the clamp and the wires are soldered together.
The upper end portion of two of the vertical wires diametrically opposite are bent to form an eye 0, in which is secured the lower end portions of the bail S.
The lower end portion of the handle T is secured to and about the wire Q and soldered to it and one of the vertical wires P. Thr. upper end portion is secured to the band N.
In operation, to fill the can the screw-cap, K is turned off, the can filled through the aperture provided, and the cap turned on, the valves 1) and j closing the aperture (1 and h to prevent evaporation and contact with lire, and when oil is being poured from the can the valvej will roll from its seat over the aperture h against the cage-Wire k and allow the oil to flow from the can through the spout L, and the valve f roll from its seat over the aperture d to allow air to flow into the can.
The body portion A may be ribbed vertically or circumferentially or decorated in various ways.
The advantages of this construction over others will be readily seen and appreciated by those using such an article. It is easily kept clean, the glass portion and its contents can always be seen, andthe glass is better protected by the wire covering than by a close fitting m'et-al jacket.
The automatic operation of the valves does away with the use of corks or other forms of stoppers, providing a degree of safety not hitherto attained, as in case the oil should become ignited as poured from the can when the can is righted the apertures by which the oil flows out and the air in will be closed instantly and simultaneously, thus shutting off all'avenues of egress or ingress.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, I
and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-' 1. In combination with a can constructed 25 as hereinbefore described, a handle T, the lower end portion of which is secured to the wires P and Q, and the upper end portion of said handle secured to the band N about the upper portion of said can, substantially as de- 0 scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, a can the top of which is formed with two apertures, each of which is encircled by an annular flange, valved caps secured to said flanges, and a bar fixed to and 3 5 connecting said caps, whereby the caps are prevented from turning, substantially as set forth.
