SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,760, dated July 16, 189 5.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JAMES GARD- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montgomery, county of Montgomery,
`and State of Alabama, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in Non-Fillable Bottles, of which the following is a specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts. p
' This invention relates to bottles, and the object thereof is to produce a bottle having a non-removable stopper so constructed that when the bottle has been once iilled and the stopper applied the bottle may be emptied of its contents, but cannot be refilled.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in Which- Figure l represents a central vertical section ot' the upper part of a bottle and its neck provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the non-removable stopper.
Referring to the drawings., the numeral 2 designates theupper part of the body of the bottle provided with a neck the inner walls of which are preferably straight and in which is placed a non-removable stopper 3, which may be secured therein in any desired manner, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates. i
The non-removable stopper 3 consists of a tubular plug, preferably formed of glass and having a series of valves arranged therein, as shown in Figs. l and 2. These valves are secured to the plug by cutting away the opposite sides thereof at an inclination, as shown at 4, 5, and 6, forming recesses in said plug, the lower walls of which are inclined upwardly, as shown, and the upper walls of whichare preferably straight. These recesses are formed practically at right angles to each other, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and at the lower part of the downwardly-inclined walls of each is hinged or secured a valve 7. These valves are so hinged as to admit of their opening outwardly or in the direction of the nozzle, and also so that they will only partially open, or to the position shown in dotted lines,
Fig. l. The upper end of the tubular plug or stopper 3 is also cut away at an inclination similar to that of. the inclination of the lower walls of the notches or recesses, and on the lower side of said cut-away portion is also hinged a valve 7 similar to those hereinbefore described.
The outer walls of the upper end of the neck of the bottle are provided with the usual enlarged portion, by Which is formed an annular shoulder or projection 8, and secured thereto is a cap or cover 9 of metal, one side of which is provided with an in wardly-directed shoulder or projection l0 and the other side of which is curved over said shoulder or projection, as clearly shown in Fig. l, forming a discharge-nozzle ll.
In applying my invention the bottle is first filled in the usual manner, after which the non-removable stopper is forced into the neck and secured therein `in any desired manner, and the cap 9 is then applied and the discharge-nozzle 1l closed by a cork or plug. The cap 9 is so placed that the inwardly-directed shoulder or projection l0 extends over the end of the valve 7 at the upper end of the stopper or plug, as clearly shown in Fig.. l.
lVhen it is desired to empty the bottle of its contents or discharge a portion thereof, the cork or plug in the nozzle is removed and the bottle held inverted or tilted, when the contents thereof will flow out through the nonremovable stopper, the valves 7 opening suiii- 'ciently to admit of this operation,which may be continued or repeated until the bottle is entirely emptied.
If an attempt should be made to refill the bottle by pouring liquids into the nozzle the valves 7 will at once be reseated, as will be readily understood, and no liquids can enter the bottle, and this operation of these valves would be the same in any position in which the bottle could be held in order to admit of the pouring of liquids thereinto, and it will be observed that the upper valve 7 is so arranged that when it opens :it cannot open beyond the dotted line shown in Fig. l by reason of the inner projection or shoulder l0 on the cap, and also that by reason of this arrangement any liquids poured in through the nozzle or opening ll would fall upon. this valve and close it. The object of the inwardly- IOO directed shoulder or projection 10 in the cap 9 is also to prevent the insertion of the finger or a wire or rod or other instrument to interfere with the operation of the valves or prevent the same, as will be readily understood.
I do not, of course, limit myself to the form of valves shown and described or to the exact form, construction, and combination of any of the parts of myimprovement as herein set forth, as it is evident that many changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the scope of my invention; nor do I limit myself to the number of valves shown, though I prefer to use four, that being the number shown in the drawings, and by which arrangement the bottle cannot be held in a position to admit of pouringliquids thereinto without the closing of one or more of said valves and thus pre` venting said operation, but
Having fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the neck of a botA tle,of a non-removable stopper secured therein, said stopper consisting of a tubular plug having notches or recesses cnt in the walls thereof at right angles to each other, the lower Walls of said notches or recesses being upwardly inclined, and a valve hinged to each of said inclined slots at the bottom thereof, the operation of said valves being to open and admit ofthe discharge of the contents of the bottle but close and prevent the refilling thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the neck of a bottle, of a non-removable stopper secured therein, said stopper consisting of a tubular plug having notches or recesses cut in the walls thereof at right angles to each other, the lower walls of said notches or recesses being upy wardly inclined, and a valve hinged to each of said inclined slots at the bottom thereof, the operation of said valves being to open and admit of the discharge ot' the contents of the bottle but close-and prevent the refilling thereof, and a cap surrounding the nozzle of the bottle and secured thereto and provided with inwardly directed shoulder or projection and a discharge nozzle, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, withabottle, of a nonof, consisting of a tubular plug having a series of notches or recesses cut therein, one above the other, and each of said notches or recesses being practically at rightA angles to the one immediately below it, and the lower wall thereof being upwardly inclined, and a valve hinged to each of said lower Walls at the bottom thereof, the construction and arrangement being such that the valves will open toadmit of the discharge of the contents of the bottle but close and prevent refilling thereof, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the neck of a bottlc, of a non-removable stopper consisting of a tubular plug the upper end of which is cut away at an inclination, the longer side of the plug extending practically to the neck of the bottle, a valve hinged to the shorter or lower side of said plug and adapted to close the opening therein, and a cap inclosing the upper end of said neck and provided with an inwardly directed shoulder or projection which extends over the free end of said valve and is provided with a discharge nozzle or opening, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with the neck of a bottle, of a non-removable stopper consisting of a tubular plug which is provided with a series of notches or recesses, the lower Walls of which are inclined forwardly, and avalve hinged to the lower portion of said lower walls and adapted to close the passage through said stopper the upper end of the plug being also cnt away at an inclination, and having a valve hinged at the .lower side thereof adapted to close the end of the openingin said stopper, and a cap secured to the upper end of the neck of the bottle having an inwardly directed shoulder or projection which extends over the free end of said end valve and is provided with a discharge nozzle or opening, substantially as shown and described.
