Description

H P. OAYGE. SASH BALANCE.
' (N0 Modl.)
Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
ATTUHIVEK' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY P. OAYOE, OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS.
SASH-BALANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,742, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed August 9, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. CAYCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcos, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balances; and I 'do de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to sash balances and hoisters; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a window-frame and sash with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of 1, showing the left-hand side. Fig. 3 is also a longitudinal sectional View of Fig. 1, showing the righthand side. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
My invention is described as follows: I make my sash A with a groove a, in their upper edge. Near both ends of said grooves are journaled pulleys a. The construction of the upper and lower sash is identical. In
" the top of the frame and on each side of the window are journaled pulleys a and a respectively. One end of a rope C is securely fixed to the top of the frame at point 0; then it runs under the pulleys a in the'groove a, of the upper sash, then up and over the pulley a then it descends to the lower sash and runs under the pulleys a in the groove a of said lower sash; then it ascends and passes "over the pulley a from which it runs down to a cleat B. Said cleat consists of a right and left wing, with a V-shaped groove b between the two. One end of each of these wings tapers in a straight line upward and outward to a point, and said points indicate opposite directions. Said cleat is also provided with perforations I), through which pass screws which attach said cleat to the window-frame.
My invention is operated as follows: When the sash are in the position as shown in Fig.
Serial No. 361,508. (No model.)
1, and it is desired to raise the lower one, this can be done by simply pulling cord 0, and when the sash is raised to the desired height the cord is brought down under the lower point of the cleat B, then up in the groove b, and under the upper point of said cleat. This will hold the sash in position. When the sash are in the position as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to lower the upper one, this can be done by unwinding cord 0 from the cleat and letting it run over the pulley er The weight of the upper sash will cause it to descend, and when it is down asufficient distance the cord can be wound around the cleat. Thus the saidupper sash Will be held in the desired position. When the sash are in the position last above described and it is desired to raise the upperone, place one hand on the lower sash and pull the cord with the other. Then the sash is closed, the cord is Wound around the cleat. When the sash are in the position as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to raise the lower one and lower the upper one at the same time, all that is necessary to be done is to push the lower sash up, and the upper sash will of its own weight desoend, and thus we have the weight of one sash balancing the weight of another.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a window-frame provided with the pulleys a and a sash A, provided with the grooves a, and pulleys a, working in said grooves, and cord 0, having one end attached to the upper part of the frame at a, passing thence under pulleys a in the upper sash, thence" over pulley a thence down and under pulleys co in the lower sash, thence up and over pulley a thence down to a cleat B, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY P. OAYCE. Witnesses:
THOMAS TAYLOR, WILLIAM W. HARDY.
