Description

\VILLTAM C. MERCKEL, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
SASH=BALANCE.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,246, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed October 4, 1886.
To all whom 2125 may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. MERGKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel arrangement of actuating-chain and means for operating the same to pull down and lift up the balance-weight of a windowsash for raising and lowering the latter; and to such end the invention consists in the features of construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed, reference 1). in made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of a sash-balance. Fig. 2 is a section in the line ac :13, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in section, of a chain-wheel or sprocketwheel and its shaft. Fig. et is a detail view of part of a chain. Fig. 5 is a section along the line y y, Fig. 3, on a larger, scale than Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section along the line 1' 11, Fig. 1, on larger scale than Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section along the line 2 .2, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a front view of an anti-friction roller. Fig. 9 is a section along the line n: to, Fig. 8.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
111 the drawings, the letter A indicates a sash of a window or shutter adapted to slide in the frame 13. Chains or cords 0 connect the sash to the weights or balance D D. The cords C pass over pulleys E, so as to travel easily when the sash is being raised or lowcred. To one of the weights is secured an actuating cord or chain, F, passing about a pulley, G, and about a chain-wheel, H, the lugs K of which prevent slipping of the chain. The ends of the chain F are fixed to the weight D, The chain-wheel H is adapted to be turned by its shaft 1 and a handle or crank, L. The shaft 1 is suitable journaled in the frame B, and the handle L is within convenient reach of a person in the room.
hen the wheel H is turned in one direction, the weight D is raised and the sash A is lowered. \Vhen the wheel H is turned in the other direction, the weight D is drawn down and the sash A is raised.
The sash cord or chain O is secured at one $erial No. 287,136. (No model.)
extremity to the balanceweight D, passes over the pulley E, and is secured at its other extremity to the sash, while the actuatingchain F is secured at its two extremities, respectively, to the upper and lower ends of the balance-weight D, and between such attached extremities the said actuating-chain passes over the pulley G and around the chainwheel H, with the sprockets K of which chain-wheel the chain-links engage, so that the chain is positively moved in either direction by the rotation of the chain-wheel.
To prevent jamming of the sash A, I use anti-friction rollers M. Said anti -friction rollers, as seen in Fig. 6, have each two bearing-flanges separated by a space, so that when the sash A passes up to the top of the frame B said flanges of the rollers M will pass up over the rollers E, said rollers E resting in the spaces between the flanges of the antifriction roller. The cord 0 also passes through the space between the flanges of the antifriction roller M. Supplemental rollers N may be used to. assist the rollers M in preventing jamming of the sash.
Prior to my invention a sash suspended by a sash-cord and balanceweight has been operated through the medium of a supplemental cord secured at one extremity to the weight and at the other end to a winding-drum, the rotation of which winds or unwinds the supplemental cord to raise or lower the sash. Such differs from my invention, in that I provide an'actuating-chain the two extremities of which are attached, respectively, to the upper and lower ends of a balance-weight, while between such attached ends the said chain passes over a pulley and a chain-wheel, the latter serving by its rotation to positively move the chain in either direction to pull the weight up and down for raising and lowering the sash.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the sash A, the balanceweight D, pulleys E G,and the sash cord or chain C, connecting the weight and sash, of the chain-wheel H, having an operating-shaft, I, provided with a handle, L, and the actuatingchain F, having its two extremities attached, respectively, to the upper and lower ends of the balance weight, and between such a ttached extremities passing over one of the my hand in the presence of two subscribing pulleys and around the chain-Wheel, and with Witnesses.
the sprockets of which the chain-links engage, so that the rotation of the chain-wheel forces 5 the chain in either direction to pull the weight both up and down, substantialiyas described. 111 testimony whereof I have hereunto set WM. 0. MERCKEL. Vitnesses:
WM. 0. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
