UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS DALTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CIGAR-CUTTER AND MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 439,481, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed February 13, 1890. Serial No. 340,240.
''o all whom, it may camera:
Be it known that I, THOMAS DALroN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Oigar-Cutter and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in which* Figure I is a top or plan view of my invention. Fig. I is a vertical central sectional elevation of Fig. I on line x; Fig. III, an elevation of the weighted end of the pvoted knife-plate, removed from the other mechanism; Fig. IV, an elevation of the knife, looking in the direction indicated by dart z, the Weighted lever to which it is attached, a portion of one side of the case, and one of the guides which keeps the knife centrally between the sides of the case.
This inventon relates to an improvement in devices for cutting off the tips of cigars, and by the manipulation of the same devices preventing more than one match at a time from being taken from the match-receptacle.
The nature and Operation of the invention will be fully understood by the following detail description,
A B C represent the wood base, which has formed therein a receptacle E to hold the cigartips, and amatch-receptacle F, the latter being provided with a groove G below, so that the finger may be put under the matches. The metal portion consists of the sides K H L and ends I N J M. The portions H I J proj ect out beyond the other portions and in them are tapped screw-threads, in which screws (shown by dotted lines t' z' i) are turned to hold the wood and metal together. The end portion M of the case extends down to the bottom of the groove G, and vertically in its central portion is formed an open slot Q,in order that the fingers may be put into the match-receptacle, the wood base being cut away atR for a like pu rposea On the side portions L, at 3 3, are formed upwardly-projecting eyes to receive the bolt S, whichpivots the weighted knifeplateab clto the case, The front portion over the weight T is pitched downward and cut away centrally at l? to be out of the way of the fingers entering the receptacle F. Hence the weight is double, as shown at Figsz I and II.
(Model) The knife-holder consists of a metal block U, pivoted to the sides of the metal caseby a bolt f, and its front end has a bearing flat against the insides of the double-weighted portion when the knife and knife-plate are in position, as at Fig. II. A cigar-tip m can be inserted in the hole c or in smaller holes e e. On the holder U are formed two lugs or stops V and oc, which regulate the throw of the knifeplate by the lug X coming against the lefthand edge of bar or cross-piece W`, which is a portion of the case When the knife-plate is in the position shown, and the lugs V- come against the opposite edge of the bar when the knife-plate is in the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. II. (last with the metal portion of the case are inwardly-projecting guides Y Z, which serve as guides to hold the knife centrally on the pin f. A plan of the guides is shown at Fig. I, and cross-section of one guide isshown at Fig. IV. The shank h of the knife g is slotted at p, that it may be Secured to the holder U and adjusted and held by a screw. The blade g is bent at an obtuse angle to the shank at apoint above the top of the case, so that it may not come in contact with it. The weighted portions T T of the knife-plate are provided each with a projection O, which when the weighted levers are down come upon the frame. VVhen the levers are in this position a match can be brought up between them and the frame and to the projections T T, which will rise high enough above the frame to permit but one match to be taken out at a time, there being only space for this purpose.
In practice it is found that the Weighted portions serve a much better purpose for holding the knife and knife-plate in position to cut off a tip of a cgar than springs, in that the power is mostly expended in cutting off the tip and not in forcingthe knife-plate down, and, as a result, dry cigars are not broken.
The knife can be taken out tobe sharpened by loosening the screw under the knife-plate and then raising the front end of the holder U by inserting the finger through Opening P Q. This permits the knife-plate to be raised nearly perpendicular, the match-safe being opened at the same time.
VV hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
IOO
1. In a cigar-ontter and match-safe, a twopart case divided into two eompartments for separatingtobacoo ohips from matohes in the lower part, and an upper portion extending into the compartments of theV lower part, in combination With a knife, knife-holder, and a knife-plate which has holes for receiving the tips of cigars and is pivoted to the Upper part and forked at one end, said forked portions being Weighted and provided With projeetions O O, which eXtond to the end plate of the case and are elevated above said plate when the knife-plate is brought to a horizontal po,- sition and the Weighted forked portions of the knife-plate are brought to the end plate to permit a single match to be removed ata time, as speoified and shown.
2. A knife-plate forked at its' rear end;the forked portion being Weighted, said plate being provided With one or more holes at its front end for reeeiving,` the tip of a cigar to reach the knife and pivoted to the sides of the case, in combination With a knife-holder and a knife adjustably conneoted therewith, the holder being pivoted to the Sides of the case and provided with stops, a transverse plate on the top of the case to regulate the throW of the knife, and a eompartment to receive the chips out from the ciga1',as and for the purpose speoified.
