MERCHANDISE-PACKAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,367, dated October 14, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARVEY P. BARBER,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise-Packages, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a destructible package which is more especially designed for use as a retail butter-package, wherefrom the contents may be removed intact.

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a package embodying my improved features; Fig.2, a similar View showing the package in a reversed position; Fig. 3, a plan; and Fig. 4, a broken-away section in plane 4, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a cylindrical body forming the inclosing vertical sides of the package, which is originally in the form of an open. band, the ends a a of which, when brought together, overlap, as shown in Fig. 1. The outside end a may be detachably secured to the opposite inner part by stitching or in any other mannerthat will provide for a convenient separation at this point, so that the contents of the package may be removed intact. The lower edge of the band forming the body of the package is turned upward and inward to form the annular integral shoulder a for the support of the loosely-inserted bottom B. This bottom may be forced out in an upward direction, but not downward, so that the contents can also in this manner he removed intact.

Butter and merchantable products of a simi- 4o lar character are usually retailed to the consumer from large packages, which is neither convenient nor cleanly.

By this arrangement the product may be put up at the factory in packages suitable for the retail trade, of one pound or more, and the same will reach the consumerin the original package and in an unbroken condition and the package and contents easily and conveniently separated. The retail-packages will be ordinarily covered with wax-paper; but a regular paper cover may be used when desired. For transportation a number of the retail-packages will be packed in a suitable shipping-case.

Paper will be the material ordinarily used in the manufacture of the package.

Having thus described my invention, wha I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a destructible package of the character described, the combination of the body orinclosing sides formed from a single band, the overlapping ends being detachably secured with relation to each other, and the lower edge turned upward and inward to provide the annular shoulder, and the bottom loosely inserted and resting on said shoulder, whereby the bottom may be forced out in an upward direction only, or the body may be separated from the contents and bottom, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
