SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,165, dated October 14, 1890. Y Application filed August 26, 1889- Serial No. 322,006. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. LANCASTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaX- ahachie, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lid for the churn-body. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the dashers and dasher-rods.
In carrying out my invention Iemploy a base A, on the upper side of which, near one end of the same, I provide the curved ribs or iianges B, between which the churn-body rests and by which it is prevented from moving When the device is in use. At and near the opposite end of the base I provide the standards C, which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar D, and are provided near said' upper ends with the rightangled openings E, as shown. The drivingshaft F is journaled in said openings, and is tted therein by being pushed through the horizontal branches of the same and then allowed to drop to the lower ends of the vertical branches thereof. The driving-shaft is held in the said recesses by the blocks G, which are shaped similar to the recesses and are slipped longitudinally into the same and then secured by any suitable means so as to prevent the driving-shaft rising, as clearly shown. The driving-shaft is provided at its front end with a beveled gear-wheel H and at its rear end with arly-wheel I, and between the standards C C, I form a crank-arm J on the driving-shaft, and said crank-arm is connected by a pitm-an K with a treadle L, which is mounted on the base between the standards.
On the upper side of the crossbar D, I secure the dasher-rod-supporting arm, which consists of a stationary member M and a swinging member N, hinged to the stationary member and adapted to fold thereagainst, and the said stationary and swinging members are provided in their meeting edges, near their front or outer ends, with the notches rod. The members are held together bya spring-latch P, whichis secured to the swinging member and is provided near its end with a perforation Q, adapted to engage a pin R on the upper side of the stationary member. The swinging member is supported when it is turned outward away from the stationary member by a horizontal rearwardly-inclined arm S, secured to the stationary member and provided with a longitudinal slot T, through which the swinging member plays.
f I employ two dashers U V, the inner one U consisting of a solid blade or paddle provided with a longitudinal vertical slot at its center and having the dasher-rod X rising from its upper end at the center of the same. The outer dasher is composed of a cross-bar Y, having the depending arms Z at its ends and provided on its upper side with a sleeve 0;, which encircles the dasher-rod X, as clearly shown. The cross-bar Y is re-enforced by the metallic plates h, secured to its sides so as to prevent its splitting. The tube or sleeve a has a pinion c keyed to its upper end and meshing with the gear-wheel I-I on the front end of the driving-shaft. The dasher-rod X has a pinion CZ keyed on its upper portion and meshing with the gear-wheel H, so that the flashers will be rotated in opposite directions.
The churn-body is covered by a lid e, consisting of two semicircular sections having their edges overlapping, and provided with notches f, adapted to t around theA dasherrod, and the said sections are held together by a link g, having its ends pivoted to the said sections, so that one of said sections may be swung horizontally to and away from the other, and thus permit the lid to be easily fitted around the dasher-rods. The sections are held together while the lid is in place by a spring h, secured to one section and provided at its free end with a perforation z', engaging a pin j on the other section.
In practice the churn-body is iilled, either entirely or partially, with cream and is placed in position on the base, after which the treadle is operated in the usual manner to rotate the driving-shaft. The dasher-rods will thus be rotated in contrary directions and the dashers caused to thoroughly agitate the O, which are adapted to [it around the dashercream and produce butter. The dashers may be readily adjusted so that one or the other will not be rotated by moving the proper pinion along its key so as to throw it out of mesh with the gear-wheel on the drivingshaft. By reason of the peculiar construction of the supporting-arm for the dasherrods they Will be provided with a iirm bearing While in use, and can be readily removed when not in use, or when it is desired to clean or repair the churn. The construction of the lid causes it to form a thoroughy dust-proof cover for the churn-body, and at the same time enables it to be conveniently operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- The `combination of the standard, the supporting-arm secured thereon and consisting of astationary member, a swinging member hinged thereto, a latch secured to the swinging member and engaging the stationi ary member, and the slotted arm secured to the stationary member and passing around the swinging member, and the dasher-rods supported by and between the members of said arms, as set forth.
2. In a churn, the standards, the shaft F, having crank J, combined with the treadle L, having pitman K connected to the crank,the right-angled openings E, having blocks G, the pinion I-I on shaft F, the dashers, one arranged within the other and driven in opposite directions, the pinion d on one dashershaft and the pinion c on the other dashershaft, both pinions meshing with the pinion H, as set forth.
