SAD-IRON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,758, dated October 7, 1890.

Application filed March 10, 1890. Serial No. 343,438. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, PORTER BRISTOL HAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Handsborough, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain nev and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do declare the following to b e a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invent-ion relates to an improvement in sad-irons, and the novelty Will be fully understood from thefollowin gdescription and claim when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side vieW of the iron With the handle in position. Fig. 2 is an interior view of the arm attached to the iron, showing the opening and pin. Fig. 3 is aview of the top of the arm. Fig. 4 is an end view showing the shield attached to the handle. Fig. 5 is a side view of the handle, showing the bolts and shield in position. Fig. G is a side View of the key. Fig. 7 is a top View of the shield with one end of the same curved.

Referring to the drawings annexed, A represents an iron B, the arms rigidly attached to the iron, and which have an opening I therein, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

H designates a pin or cross-piece, as shown in Fig. 3.

D designates hookbolts, which are attached to handle C, one of said bolts being rigidly attached and the other extending Within the handle and resting upon a spring, as shown by L in Fig. 5.

E is a shield made, preferably, of metal with openings d in the same for attaching a pad or covering F, which may be of leather or other material, the ends of shield E being provided at intermediate points With two slots P, which When the ends are bent inwardly upon themselves are easily adjusted on the hook-bolts D, as shown in Fig. l, G being a key which prevents the slotted ends of the shield E from being released from the hookbolts D, the key passing through slots in the bolts and also through the loops at the ends of the shield.

The mode of operation is asfollows: The handle C being detached, as shown in Fig. 5, the rigid hook-boltD is `inserted in the openingI and the slot K engages the pin or crosspiece H, and by pressing back the spring hookbolt D on the opposite end of handle C by means of pressure exerted on the slotted end of shield E the pin or cross-piece I-I may be placed within the slot K and a positive fastening be made, as shown in Fig. l. When it is desired to detach the handle C, simply press back the spring hook-bolt D and the pin or cross-piece H is released from the slot K, and the handle may be readily removed from arms B of the iron.

In heating thc irons the handles are detached,and as each iron is desired to be used the handle is attached in the manner described. One handle can be used for several irons.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the detachable handle provided With bolts, the shield having its opposite ends bent or looped and slotted, and the key adapted to enter the slots of the bolts and also the loops of the shield, substantially as specified.
