Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. J ULL, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FARNUM T. FISH, OF SAME PLACE.
G RATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,695, dated October 7, 1890.
Application filed December 26, 1889- Serial No. 334,960. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. J ULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Nutmeg Graters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to graters for grating or grinding nutmegs and the like; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, said views showing the interior construction and arrangement of the device.
A represents a circular box or casing, having a flange a.
B is a cap, also having an oifset and flange b on its rim fitted and secured onto the flange of the part A, and forming an annular groove of greater diameter than the box A.
In the center of the cap B is provided an opening, in which is placed a short shaft C, having a hand-crank H attached. On the inner end of said shaft is secured a grater-disk D, the periphery of which revolves in the aforesaid annular groove.
The interior of the box A is divided by a diagonal partition E F. The upper compartment formed by this partition has a slanting bottom, so that nutlnegs contained therein shall fall toward the grating-disk D. Said partition is divided into two parts vertically. The part E is permanently fixed, while the part F is only fixed at its top to the back wall of the box. This leaves its lower part free to spring. The purpose of the spring part of the partition F is that it being the part which holds the nutmegs against the grater may yield and prevent clogging or over-grinding.
Slots are provided in the lower part of rims a b for the discharge of the gratings. The upper side of the box is provided withan opening and a suitable lid, by which the nutmegs are placed in the box.
In using, the box is held in the left hand and the crank turned by the right, thus rapidly andperfectly grating the nutmegs.
I am aware that rotating grater-disks, as D, have been used in circular boxes or casings. I do not claim such; but the slanting partition E and accompanying spring-partition F in combination therewith are new, and such I do claim, as follows:
The combination, with circular box A, cap B permanently fixed thereto, and the rotat ing grater-disk D, fixed on shaft 0, turning in said cap 13, of the slanting fixed partition E, and spring-partition F, as and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL T. J ULL.
