SHREDDING-MACHINE.
Application filed February 27, 1912. Serial No. 680,254.
To all ecirom it may concern Be it known that I, Smbnnn T. STUVER, a citizen of. the United States, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State 5 of Washington, have invented a new and Improved shreddingMachine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to vegetable shredders and more particularly to a new and improved device involving few parts of simple construction, the rotatable element therein being removable whereby a similarelement, but one providing for a different degree of shredding, may be in serted.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a vegetable shredder comprising a suitable casing with a rotatable shredding element mounted therein, this shredding element taking a plurality of forms whereby difi'erentedegrees of shredding may be obtained. 1
Other objects and advantages of thein- '55 wen-tion will appear as the description thereof procemie new and-useful featu es be ing pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, inwhich similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all theviews, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the shredder in operative position; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical .sectional view at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective new of a modifiedform of shredding element.
As shown in the drawings, the device comthereo-f and'adjacent one end, the lug3 being provided with a transversely movable 'bolt 4 whereby the device may be positioned thr'eaded opening 10 adjacent one end thereof in engagement with the shaft 8, whereby turning of the handle will turn the shaft.
Secured to the upper end 6 of the standposition by means of bolts and nuts 12, the
Specification of- Letters Patent,
prises any suitable standard 1 having a pl.u-. rality of lugs 2, 3, extending transversely,
adjacent the edge portion of any support 5.
ard 1 'is the casing 11, preferably .held in' Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
upper portion of this casing being provided with an opening, there being a hopper 13 adacent thereto adapted to receive vegetables or other substances. This casing member 11 is preferably frusto-conical in construction, one end thereof being closed' by the member 14 which lies closely adjacent the upper end 6 of the standard 1. The other end of the casing member 11 is open, this open end being the end of larger diameter whereby the revoluble shredding elementlo or 15 may be conveniently placed in position.
The inner end of the threaded shaft 8 is provided with a frusto-conical supporting member 16 having a number of lugs 17 on the outer side and extending normally therefrom, these lugs being adapted to be received in the openings 18 positioned adjacent the smaller end of the shredding element 15 or 15. 1
The shredding element 15 is preferably of frusto-conical formation and is providedwith a number of outwardly bent blades 19 which may be of any desirable construction, the
othernslrge ldii ig elementlb being provided with continuouslmhides -20,--the The hopper 1 3 is designed to receive a I suitable number of vegetables or other substances which are to be shredded, turning of the handle 9 rotating the shredding elements and bringing the outer edges of the blades into engagement with the vegetables whereby suitable portions are removed from them which pass through the openings in the elements adjacent the blades, theshredded material leaving the open endof the elements and being received in any suitable receptacle. If so desired, the hopper 13 may be provided with a movableelement 21 in the'na ture of a cover adapted to be. pressed down' against the vegetables or, other substances and bring them into firm engagement .with the blades of the rotatable shredding ele ments.
The shredding elements shown differ from. each other only in the particular form of .blades provided thereon, it being obvious that the construction and operation of the device remain the samewhateverthe form of blade; the blades are easily changed by removing the handle 9 and withdrawin the circular supporting member 16, after w 'ch the shredding element thereon may be taken oil and the other form placed in position.
' Having thus described my invention, I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 4
1. In a shredding machine, the combination of a conical casin having its smaller end closed, and a, shred ing element mounted in'the casing, said element comprising a disk-like-lmeinber having a frusto-conical flan e and a centrally arranged shaft projecting therefrom, said flange being providedwith external pins, and 'an open ended frusto-conical tubular body having peripheral bladesvand pi'ovided with L-shaped openings at its smaller'end, the horizontal portions of the openingsbeing adjacent the smaller end ofthe body and the longitudinal portions extending in the direction of the opposite larger end of said body, the smallerendof the body fittin upon the said flange with the pins thereo engagin its slots and its end closely adjacent the c osed end of the casing.
2,111 & shredding. machine, the combinav tion of a support, a frusto-conical casing having its smaller end closed and secured to the support, the closed end of the casing and support having registering openings, adisk rlike member having a frusto-conical flange and a central shaft mounted in the openings of the support and easing, the said flange being provided with pins on-its periphery, and a frusto conical tubularbody open atbothends and provided with peripheral blades and in itssmaller-end with L-shaped openings,.the said smaller end of the body being closely adjacent said closed end of the casing andfitting on the said flange with the pins of the flange projecting into the openings of the body, whereby'the body can be readily attached to or removed from the disk-like member and when attached and the parts are in position the EVA C.
