END-GATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,474, dated September 30, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that LIRVIN BAUGHMAN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Edinburg, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consistsin anew and improved end-gate for wagons, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon provided with my new and improved endgate, showing the gate closed and fastened. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the end-gate lowered into its open position; and Fig. 3 isa sectionalview, which will be hereinafter referred to.

The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the body of a wagon which is provided with my new and improved end-gate. To the rear end bolster A of this wagon is secured two stationary hooks B B, which may be called hinge-hooks, as they serve as hinges, on which the lower end of the endgate turns in opening and closing.

The endTgate O is formed with the side pieces 0' C, while the gate is strengthened by the cross-bars c.

In operation the lower straight edge of the end-gate rests in the open hinge-hooks B B, which, as will be seen from the drawings, permit of the gate being raised into its closed position or lowered into its open position.

To the end-gate are bolted the side bars D, which are formed at their free ends with the upwardly-curved hooks D.

To the rear ends of the lower side-boards of the wagon are secured the combined fasteners and stops E E for the end-gate, consisting of metal pieces, the forward ends of which are curved out to formhooks or stops E.

When the endgate is lowered or opened, it will be seen that when it reaches the position shown in Fig. 2, the end hooks D of the side bars D will engage with the stops E, and the end-gate will thus be held securely in its open position.

The projecting rear ends of the pieces E are somewhat rounded and are formed at their extremities with the eyes E In these eyes E are hinged the stop-loops F, which are preferably formed, each, as shown, of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop and having its ends soldered together to form a projection in line with theloop. The end-gate is formed close to each side with the small openings G, and preferably metal bushings H, with a central aperature of the same diameter, are secured to the outer side of the end-gate, registering with these openings G. The object of these metal bushings is to prevent Wear and reduce friction. shown in section in Fig. 30f the drawings.

When the end-gate is raised to close it, the openings G register with the rear ends of the These openings are fasteners E and the projecting ends of the stop-loops F are raised so that they will pass through the openings G. When the gate has been raised and brought against the rear end of the wagon-body, the eyed ends E of the fasteners will project through the openings G, when the stops F are turned and pushed down through the eyes E. It will be seen that when the stops are thus turned their loop ends will extend down below the eyes E while their solid projecting ends will extend above the eyes, as clearly shown in the drawing, thus effectually holding the end-gate locked in its closed position.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my new and improved wagon end-gate is simple and. strong in construction, and that it can be easily opened and closed, being held by the bars D when open and firmly secured by the fasteners E when closed. Also, when desired, as in dumping coal, &c., from the wagon, the end-gate is lifted off clear of the wagon and out of the way, as it only rests and turns in the hingehooks B B, and is not in any way secured to them. This is a decided advantage, as the the fasteners E pass through them they fill them, and it is impossible for grain or anything else contained in the Wagon to escape from the Wagon through these openings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a Wagon-body, of the open hinge-hooks B, the removable and detachable end-gate having its lower end adapted to fit in the said hinges, the inclined side bars D, secured thereto and formed at their lower free ends with the end hooks D, and the stop-hooks E, secured to the sides of the wagon-body and adapted to be engaged by the end hooks D of the side bars D when,

the end-gate is lowered, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a Wagon-body, of an end-gate adapted to be raised and lowered and formed with the small openings G, the

fasteners E, formed with the projecting ends and the eyes E and the short stop-loops F, formed each of a single Wire bent to form the loop end and the solid projecting end or part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a wagon-body, of the open hinge-hooks B B, the removable endgate formed with the small openings G and having the metal bushings H, the side bars having the end hooks, the combined fasteners and stops E formed with the forward stops E, and having the extended rear ends formed with the eyes E and the stop-loops F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
