Description

(No Model.)
D. JOHNSON. DooR.
v No. 487,488.
' Impllhll UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
DONALD JOHNSON, OF WEST SUPERIOR, WISOONSIN.
DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,438, dated September 30, 1890.
Application filed March 12, 1890. Serial No. 343,583. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Superior, in the county of Douglass and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in-the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a new and improved folding door, which is formed of sections hinged together on Vertical lines and suspended at it-s upper edge, so that the door can be folded back flat against the jamb of the door-casing, thus obviating the necessity of providing a space between the walls for its reception.
My invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accornpanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view showing my new and improved folding door partly opened. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the door and the track on which it is supported. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the swiveled castings which support the door, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a section of the track on which the said casting runs.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. p
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the door-frame, which is here shown in connection with my folding door. The top of this frame is formed with the central longitudinal slot B. The door proper is formed in three Vertical Sections C O' C2, although it may be formed of any desired number of sections. These sections are hinged at their meeting edges, as shown, and the rear section C2 is hinged to the door frame 01' jamb in the usual manner.
To the top of the door-framing are secured the longitudinal tracks D D, each of which is formed at its inner edge with the longitudinal upwardly-projecting flange D' the tracks being secured at each side of the central slot B, so that their inner-edge fianges project up in the said slot, as shown.
On one side of the upper end of each doorsection is bolt-ed an angle-plate E, the upper end of which extends over the upper edge of the door, and through this upper part E' of It will thus be seen that the door-Sections are supported at their upper ends on the tracks D by the swiveled castings, and when the door is to be opened, it is pushed back, as shown in the drawiugs, when the fianged castings G will slide freely upon the fianged tracks D, the pivots or swivels F in the upper ends of the door-Sections turning freely and easily in the castings G, preventing all possibility of binding. The door thus slides back easily and folds flat against the doorframe, where it is out of way, occupying but little room, and it can be as readily closed again.
From the foregoiug description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my new and improved folding door will be readily understood.
It will be seen that myinvention is simple and strong in construction, that the door occupies an extremely small space when folded, and that it can be employed where there is no room for forming a space between the walls for the reception of the old style of sliding door, It can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost and for any size openiugs, or for single or double doors.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the door formed of the hinged sections, the angle-plates secured to the upper ends of the said Sections, the swivels F, the castings G, formed with the parallel downwardly-extending edge-fianges, and the track-plates having the longitudinal upwardly-extending fianges at their inner edges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DONALD JOHNSON.
