UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER HOVE, OF TACOMA, VASHINGTON.
SHIPPING RECEIPT-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,786, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed May 2, 1888. Serial No. 272,574. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JASPER HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and Territory of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Receipt-Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to secure for transportation and other likeV purposes an original duplicate and triplicate receipt by a single fold and single writing and the retention in book form of the original receipt when the duplicate and triplicate receipts are separated therefrom.
The invention consists in the novel and peculiar arrangement, perforation, printing, binding, and folding of the blank sheets used, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
Figure l represents a face view of the first or long leaf of the series of blanks, showing the perforations therein and the duplicatereceipt blank printed thereon. Fig. 2 shows a similar view of the reverse side of the leaf, with the triplicate receipt printed thereon. Fig. 3 represents the second or short leaf on which the original receipt-blank is to be printed. Fig. t represents the folded long leaf with portions of the duplicate and triplicate receipt-blanks thereon torn away, showing the original receipt-blank beneath.
In the drawings like letters indicate like parts.
A is the long or extended leaf, provided with perforated lines a a. The duplicatereceipt blank is printed on one side of this leaf, and the triplicate receipt on the reverse side, so that when'the portion of the leaf containing the triplicate receipt is folded over the duplicate the face of the triplicate blank will be uppermost and will register with both the original and duplicate beneath it.
B designates the duplicate-receipt blank, and B the triplicate. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
C is the short leaf without perforations. The original receipt-blank, similar to that printed on the duplicate and triplicate, is printed on this leaf.
- The long or extended leaf A and the short leaf C are preferably bound in book form for convenience of handling and use. Any number of leaves may be bound together, provided the short leaf C follows the long leaf A in the series.
When it is desired to secure an original, duplicate, and triplicate receipt or manifest, a sheet of carbon-paper is laid upon the original receipt-blank, another sheet of carbonpaper, or a fold of the same sheet, is laid over the duplicate receipt. The triplicate is then folded, as shown in Fig. 4:. By the use of a pencil or stiff pen on the triplicate receipt the carbon tracing is made upon the duplicate and original blank. The triplicate and duplicate are then separated from each other and from the book, leaving the original receipt therein.
The advantages of my invention are that I secure by the plan adopted a shorter book than is usually provided, requiring only one fold to utilize three blanks.
What I claim as new, and of my own invention, and for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. Areceipt-book for manifolding purposes, consisting of a series of alternating long and short leaves bound together in book form, the long leaf being the iirst leaf of the series, said long leaf provided with two transverse lines of perforations, the inner line for facilitating its removal from the book and the outer 0r central line for folding said leaf upon itself when used and for its separation in two equal parts thereafter, and carbon-paper interposed between the folds of said leaf and over the face ot' the short leaf immediately following, whereby three copies of a written entry may be secured at the same time, one on the short leaf for retention in the book and two on the long leaf for removal therefrom, substantially as set forth and described.
2. A blank-book of forms for original, duplicate, and triplicate receipts, consisting of a series of alternating long and short leaves,
the long leaf forming the rst leaf of the series, the short leaf having a blank form printed on its face and the long leaf a similar form printed on reverse sides thereof, as herein shown and described, said long leaf being folded upon itself when used, bringing the three printed blanks immediately over each other, and carbon-paper interposed loetween the short leaf and the folded long leaf and between the folded parts of said long 1o leaf, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I a'x my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JASPER I'IOWE.
