JEWELRY-PENDANT.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, GEORGE W. WAsHBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at est New Brighton, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry having Pendant-Settings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates, primarily, to earrings of the description set forth in Patent No. 238,318, granted to me March 1, 1881; but may, with like eifect, be embodied in other jewelry having pendant j ewel-settings.

The present invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts hereinafter setforth and claimed, its objects being to form a more highly inconspicuous, durable, and securely-attached connecting-ring, to provide for making said ring uncut or without the customary open joint, and to provide for securely fastening in place a connecting-bar between two cramps of the jewel-setting to unite the parts-without using solder.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a front view of the connected metallic parts of an improved ear-jewel, magnified several diameters for clearness, illustrating this invention. Fig. 1 represents a vertical section through the earwire, connecting-ring, connecting-bar, and two cramps, to which the latter is attached. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and end views of the ear-wire of said ear-jewel detached, and Figs. 4 and 5 are side and top views of its j ewelsetting detached.

Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

A represents the upper part or body of an article of jewelry, and B apendant jewel-setting, which is j to be provided in customary manner with a diamond or other brilliant jewel. For suspending the j ewel-setting said part A is provided with a vertical ring R, arranged edge to the front, and the setting 13 is provided with a substantially horizontal connecting-bar C. The ring R is preferably of round or like section, as shown in Fig. 1 The particular bar 0 represented in the drawings is triangular in cross-section, with a'central concave 70 as part of its lower edge to coact with said ring; but the shape of said bar forms no part of this invention and is not considered material. To provide for making said ring R inconspicuous or neat and at the same time to render it securely attached, said part A of the article of jewelry is provided with a groove or recess 0", as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 1", so as to partly embrace the ring at the single point where it adjoins said part, said recess providing for an ample extent of soldering-surface, to which the ring is soldered fast. A protruding ring ofhardened steel may thus be securely attached; but for the purposes of the present invention the ring may be of any desired metal.

By employing a connecting-bar O on the setting B to coactwith said ring the ring need not be and is not cut or provided with the customary open joint, the absence of which materially adds to the strength of the ring. (See Fig. 2.) In assembling the parts the bar is passed through the ring and then secured. The bar is preferably of hardened steel, suitably tempered. To attach said bar to the setting B between two of the cramps, according to my said Patent No. 238,318, and so as to obviate the use of solder in fastening the bar in place, the cramps are provided with open-ended tubes 25 t, of gold or other malleable metal, let into the cramps, respectively, and soldered fast, and the ends of the bar are provided with bevels b 17, upon which the outer ends of said tubes are pressed down, as seen in Fig. 1, to fasten the bar after it is passed through the connecting-ring R, as aforesaid.

The part A, as represented in the drawings, is a jointed ear-wire, having a hinge-joint h, with a transverse horizontal axis, as set forth in my said Patent No. 238,318; but it will be seen that my present invention may be embodied in any article of jewelry having one or more pendant jewel-settings. Moreover, I do not limit my respective claims to any details hereinbefore specified which are not mentioned in the respective claims.

A knife-edge bearing between the jewelsetting and the supporting-piece in a hang ing for jewel y settings forms no part of my invention, and is hereby disclaimed.
