M. SOHWERTPUI-IRER. LOOKING DEVICE FOR PRINTING PLATES.
N0. .614. Patented Sept. 16, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX SCHVERTFUHRER, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,614, dated September 16, 1890..
Application filed May 14, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MAX SoHwERTFtiHRER, a citizen of Germany, residing at Stuttgart, Kingdom of Wiirtemburg, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lockin g Devices for Printing-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is intended as a substitute for the adjustable clamps heretofore used in printing establishments and which held the plates in place by means of screws. Said invention relates to an arrangement wherein a single light blow upon a headed pin provided for the purpose suffices to draw the clamp down upon the printing-plate and the latter upon the bed. The loosening of the clampis effected with equal ease by means of a hooked key.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section, Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 an end view, and Fig.4. a plan, of a locking device or adjustable clamp embodying my invention; and Figs. 5 and 6 a side elevation and plan, respectively, of a printing surface and bed, showing the said clamp in position.
The clamp f is attached to a box or shell H, whose bottom is inclined with relation to its top. The box or shell H has no lateral walls. Within said shell H there is a wedge K, adapted to slide on its bottom, and which is slightly broader than said bottom, and which, with its faces lo, bears laterally against the inclined surfaces of the dovetail grooves aof the bed .F whenever the wedge K is urged forward upon the bottom of the shell H. This forward movement is effected by pressure or a blow upon the head of the pin S, formed integral with the wedge K and projecting through the front wall of the shell.
The operation is as follows: When the wedge K is urged forward upon the inclined bottom of shell H in the direction indicated Serial No. 351,799. (No model.)
below the upper surface of the bed F, the
grasps the head of the pin 3 to withdraw the wedge K.
It will be noticed that inasmuch as the clamp f extends obliquely to the length of the shell and the wedge K'the strain upon said clamp and consequently upon the wedge will not be in the direction of its length, and hence such strain will not act to loosen the platelock. The plate will thus be securely held upon the bed F.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a locking device for printing-plates, the combination, with a shell provided with a plate-clamp, of a wedge adapted to slide within said shell, and means for drawing the shell downward upon the forward movement of the wedge, all substantially as described.
2. In a locking device for printing-plates,
the combination of a shell having an inclined bottom and provided with a clamp extending obliquely to its length and a wedge adapted to slide within said shell, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a locking device for printing-plates, the combination, with a shell provided with a clamp and having an inclined bottom, of a wedge having lateral wedge-faces and adapted to slide within said shell, and a bed having dovetail grooves, substantially as described, whereby the wedge will be caused to bind against the faces of its dovetail grooves when urged forward, all substantially as described.
4. A locking device for printing-plates, consisting of a shell H, arranged in the grooves of the bed, open at its sides, and having an inclined bottom, and a wedge adapted to slide on the inclined bottom provided with a pin 8, whose inclined sides It bear against the inclined sides of the dovetail grooves a of the bed F when the said wedge is urged forward, 100
and thereby secure the printing-plate on the bed F by the depression of the shell H and its clamp.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- I05
