SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,549,dated September 16', 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN M. STUKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcos, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Sash Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates, to certain new and useful improvements in window-sash holders and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and durable, and efficient device of this character, which may be readily applied to any sash now in use, and which will not mar the sash or frame.

The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combination, arrange ment, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through a Window to which my improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective detail. Fig. 3 is a section through the roller.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the upper, and B the lower, sash, of known construction, and O the window-frame.

D is a wire formed at one end with an eye a or other analogous provision by which it may be secured to the frame, as by a screw 1). Near its lower end this wire is'bent outward, as shown at c, to bring the main portion of the wire away from the frame, and the said main portion extends upward and is provided with a substantially right-angled bend d away from the sash, and then it extends upwardin an inclined direction, as shown at e, and then bends inward toward the sash, as shown at f,

and the upper end extended upward, as shown at g. The upper end of the wire is retained in any suitable manner in the horizontal portion h of the plate F, which has a vertical portion 1;, which is secured to the frame by suit-able means, as the screws j, and a depending portion 7a, extending from the outer end of the said horizontal portion, as shown best in Fig. 2.

G is the roller, which consists of a wooden or metallic hub Z and bands of rubber or analogous material m, one at each end of the hub, as shown. These bands or rings are secured to the hub in the manner shown in Fig. 3, wherein are seen semicircular annual grooves, into which the circular rubber bands are sprung.

In practice the parts are arranged as shown in the drawings, the inclined portion of the wire being arranged between the rubber rings of the roller and bearing on the hub thereof. As the sash is pushed up, the roller is moved up the incline of the wire and permits the sash to be easily moved; but upon the reverse movement of the sash the roller rides down the incline and bears against the sash and holds itfirmly in place. The greater the weight of the sash the more firmly it will be held in position. The rubber bands prevent mar-ring of the sash or frame. .The depending portion of the plate or bracket F serves to keep the roller to its work and prevents side motion thereof.

That I claim as new is- The combination, with the wire having an inclined portion and offsets, as shown, of the plate F, separate therefrom and having a vertical portion adapted to be secured to a window-frame, a horizontal portion to which the upper end of the wire is secured, a depending portion, and a roller free to ride upon the inclined portion of the wire and formed with a hub and rubber bands, one upon each end of the hub and sprung into grooves in the hub, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
