Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. COCHRAN, OF KERN RIVER, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,638, dated July 26, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN D. COCHRAN, of Kern` River, county of Tulare and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Pick, called Gochraus Iick;7 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a cheap and substantial pick, suitable for mining or other purposes, so constructed that it will possess the greatest strength at the point where the .greatest strain takes place, and also to obviate the difficulty' arising from the shrinking and swelling of the pick-handle, which diliiculty is largely coinplained of by miners on the Pacic coast.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use ot' my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make my pick of iron, pointed with steel, constructed in separate sections, with shoulders at the end of either section, or with sockets in the handle, or shoulders in the handle, as the case may be. A band of iron is placed over the base ofthe handle, constructed either with sockets or shoulders. To prevent shaking or loosening of the pick, I place india-rubber between thejoints. A beveled clasp, while iu a heated state, is placed over the base of the pick and driven on, which draws the two arms firmly together. 'Ihe band of iron is now driven down upon the flanges F F, and the construction is completed, forming aperfeet tool without shake or tremble.
Figure l in the drawings is a view of the pick with all its parts adjusted. A is the beveled clasp or dog. B Bare the arms. C is the sliding band. D is the joint or socketband. F F are the flanges of the pick. E is the handle.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view. A is the beveled clasp or dog. B B are the arms. O O are bands; D, socket-band, E, handle; F F, flanges.
Fig. 3 is the pick-head; A, dog or clasp. B B are arms; C O, band.
What I claim as my invention, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pick constructed as described, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
