UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM B. GRIGSBY, OF OAKTOVN, INDIANA.
POST-DRIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,222, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed March 6, 1890. Serial No. 342,929. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. GRIGSBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oaktown, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Driving Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a machine adapted to serve as a post-driver; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts, as will appear from the following description and accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved post-driving machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the same.
In the drawings,A refers to a base or horizontal frame, and B to an upright frame, the lower ends of the side pieces of which are provided with tenons a, which are pivoted in mortises a in the upper edges of the side pieces of frame A. The shoulders a formed by said tenons are rounded to prevent interference with the adjustment of said upright frame, as presently described. This arrangement permits the adjustment of the upright frame'B at different inclinations to the base frame, as is necessary in working or driving fence-posts on hillsides, in order to keep the upright frame in its vertical working position.
Braces G O are connected to the frames A and B, and are rendered adjustable to accommodate the adjustment of the frame B by means of bolts b engaging the lower ends of said braces and slots 1) in the frame A and bolts 1) engaging the upper ends of the braces and the frame B.
D is ahammer-block arranged between the side pieces of the frame B and having studs (1 engaging vertical slots 0 in said side pieces.
D is a cross-head, which has at its ends tenon-like guide projections or extensions (1 also engagingthe slots 0' in the side pieces of the frame B. This cross-head carries grappling-hooks E, which engage an arrow-headed stud e on the hammer-D. The arms e of the hooks E are pivoted in a slot 6 of said crosshead and engage, when the latter reaches the end of its upward movement, the upper ends of the slots of, to effect the disengagement of said hooks from said hammer. This permits the hammer to fall and deliver its blow upon the post which it is desired to drive into the ground. A rope or line F is connected to a bail e pivoted to the hammer D, and passes up over a pulley f, hung in the frame E at its upper end, and thence passes over a pulley upon the hind axle of the vehicle or runninggear, (not shown,) upon which the machine in practice is carried. It is then passed to and wound around the cylinder of the Windlass G, suitably mounted upon the frame A for elevating the hammer D.
Preparatory to driving the posts the supplemental end piece 9, hinged at one end to one sill or side piece of the frame A, is swung outward after the disengagement of its latch h from the eye or staple h of the opposite side piece or sill of said frame, which is effected by the withdrawal of a pin W from said eye or staple. The pin h is held by a chain h or other suitable means to the frame A; also, in the meantime, the hammer or block D is temporarily held elevated by a pin (not shown) inserted in an upright of the frame B under said block.
H H are rods passed through the supplemental end piece g and through the opposite end piece of the frame A, which have to be removed before the end piece gcan be swung open. These rods, together with these end pieces of the frame A, provide for holding the post while being driven and keep it plumb.
Upon the sides of the sills or side pieces A are cleats or plates h having grooves h to receive the wagon-standards to aid in holding the machine in place upon the wagon, and
through grooves 7 in the side pieces of the upright frame B are inserted bolts or pins, also engaging apertures in said standards for the same purpose.
i t' are levers pivoted to short pieces or plates 2" i, secured to the side pieces or sills of the frame A and having notches in their upper edges, which are engaged by hooks j j, connected by short chains j j to said sills or cylinder 11*, suitably mounted in the side pieces or sills of the frame A and having connected to it chains l, which are adapted to be secured to a stump and to a suitable holding or bracing stake when it is desired to use the machine as a stump-puller. This cylinder has upon it, at the outer sides of the sills or side pieces of the frame A, ratchetsrm, which are engaged by holding-pawls m, pivoted to said side pieces or sills. The cylinder H has also extending through it numerous transverse passages or sockets n, into any one or more of which is inserted a bar or lever or levers (not shown) for-securing a purchase on said cylinder to effect the turning thereof, as required, for instance, in pulling or extracting a stump. To the cylinder of the Windlass G is also connected a short line or rope I, having attached to its free end a dog or clamp I, which is used for stretching wires in constructing or erecting wire fences with the aid of said Windlass.
Having described this invention, what I frame, and the grooved or recessed cleats or.
plates on said latter frame, substantially as specified.
3. In the post-driving machine, the combination, with the upright frame suitably secured in position and having its side pieces provided with vertical slots, of the sliding cross-head having extensions engaging said slots, and grappling-hooks pivoted therein and engaging the upper ends of said slots, the hammer-block having arms also engaging said slots and provided with an arrow-head or bevel-headed stud engaging said grappling-hooks, and means for actuating said cross-head and hammer-block, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIAM B. GRIGSBY.
