A. COHENIUS.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
No. 435.207 PatentedAug. 26, 1890.
W ITJV 15635335:` 6 ai,
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM COI-IENIUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTL'E-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,207, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed May 12, 1890. Serial No. 351,49Z. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may cancer-n:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM COHENIUS, a citizen of the United States, and a r'esident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. 4 p
Figure 1 is a side View of the neck of a bottle provided with my improved stopper. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspectve detail view of the pivoted top or cover, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of the thumb-piece for Operating the same.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
' My invention relates to bottle-stoppers of the class used more particularly for cruets containing oil, vinegar, or condiments and sauces in a fluid or semi-fluid state, as sirup, bitters, &c`., in which the contents of the cruet or bottle are poured out, when desired for use, in small quantities through a narrow tube or nozzle fitted with a self-closing cap or stopper; and my improvements consist in the detailed Construction and combination of parts of a stopper of that type, as
will be hereinat'ter more fully described and claimed.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A denotes the upper part or neck of a bottle or cruet of any desired size and shape, according to the purposes for which it is intended to be used.
B is'the stopper proper, which may be of cork, rubber, or other suitable material, and is bored through centrally for the insertion of the lower end of the discharge-tube C, which has a circular cap D, cover-ing the top part of the stopper. The projecting upper part of tube or nozzle C is preferably made tapering in shape, and is provided With a slotted bracket E, projecting from one side of and at right angles to the same.
bracket J projects a short distance beyond the fulcrum pin or rivet K, so as to form an abutment or hearing against the upper side of the inner part of the hinged thumb-piece N, limiting upward notion of the same beyond a plane at right angles to the disch argetube C.
Interposed betwen the lower end of the nozzle and the plate N is a bent spring P, the resiliency of which keeps the cap of the nozzle closed by means of rod Q connected with cap D and plate N. i
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of this device will readily be understood without requiring further explanation. By grasping the neck of the bottle with the hand, and at the same time pressing lightly upon the outer end of plateN with the thumb, the disoharge tube or nozzle will be opened, so that the contents of the bottle may be poured or Shaken out. By removing the thumb from plate N the stopper will be closed tightly and instantly by spring P, the location of which is such that it is entirely out of the way and not liable to become clogged up by the hardened contents of the: bottleas When this, for instance, is used for catsup, oil, or other oleaginous condiments which are liable to gum and harden by exposure to the air.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United' States- The combination of the nozzle or dischargetube C, having slotted brackets E and J, a cap-plate G, hinged to bracket E, having an arm H and an elbow I, a fiat thumb plate N, pivoted to bracket J, having a right-angled IOO tongue or projecton M, a spring P, bem-ing my own I have hereunto affixed my signature against tube C and the projection M, and a in presence of two witnesses.
rod Q, connecting plates G and. N, all constructed and combined to Opel-ate substan- ABRAHAM COHENIUS. 5 tially in the Ina-tmer and for the purpose here- Witnesses: in shown and described. DANIEL LEVY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoin g as JAMES LIT'PLEFIELD.
