SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,536, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed April 30, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. W LTERs, acitizen of the United States, residingat Chatham, int-he county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and vuse the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gates; and it consists in certainnovel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improved gate, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing it opened. Fig. 3 is a detail view of .the arms, the pulleys, and the stops; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the vibratory rod and the lever.
The hinge-post A and the gate-post B are of the usual or any preferred construction, and are set in the ground on opposite sides of the roadway. At a slight distance from the hinge-post and on the same side of the roadway I set up the posts 0 O, at the upper ends of which I mount the pulleys D, over which the operating-ropes E run.
Adjacent to the hinge-post I set up the lever-post F, and to the said post, at the upper end of the same, I secure the lateral arms G G, which project outward toward the central line of the road and at an angle thereto. Brackets H H are secured upon these arms, and pulleys I I are hung in said brackets. The operating-ropes E pass over these pulleys I and then downward to the vibratory rod J, the lower end of said rod being pivot-ed to a lever K, which is fulcrnmed on the post F at the lower end of the same. The upper end of the vibratory rod plays between the arms G, and is adapted to engage under the stops or pins L, secured in said arms. The lever K is connected with the gate by a link M, which has one end pivoted to the gate and its other end pivoted to the under side of the lever, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The lever is provided with the depending fork N, which is adapted to fit over the link M, and thereby prevent lateral movement of the lever.

is thought, be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. A person approaching the gate on horseback or in a vevicle will give a quick sharp pull on the end of the operating-rope and the vibratory rod,
' and the lever and the link will thus be operated so as to open the gate. After the gate has been passed the other rope is given a quick sharp pull and the gate will thus be closed. It is obvious therefore that the gate is opened and closed without requiring the passenger to alight or stop his vehicle.
It will be observed that in my improved gate the vibratory rod has its upper end engaged under a stop or pin when the gate is closed and also when it is open, and consequently will be held open while the vehicle is passing, and when closed will be positively held so that it cannot be opened by cattle. WVhen the vibratory rod is engaged under the stop or pin, direct upward movement thereof is prevented by the pin, and in order to open the gate it is necessary to first move the rod from under the pin and then raise it. This desired movement is given the rod by the operating-rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the lever-post, the lateral arms secured thereto, the stops or pins on said arms, the gate, the vibratory rod, connections between the said rod and the gate, and the operating-ropes secured to the vibratory rod, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. The combination of the gate, the leverpost, the lever fnlcrumed on said post and having a fork at its end, the link connecting said lever with the gate and engaged by the fork, the vibratory rod pivoted to the lever, and the operating-ropes secured to the said rod, as set forth.
