Description
GUTTBR'BAR GUIDE.
IIIIIIII IIIII (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT JOHNSTON ROBINSON AND OYRUS F. COLLINS, OF LINNEUS,
MISSOURI.
CUTTER-BAR GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,469, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed April 2, 1890. Serial No. 346,348. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.:
Be it known that we, ROBERT JOHNSTON ROBINSON and CYRUS F. CoLLn'vs, citizens of the United States, residing at Linneus, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Harvester Cutter- Bar Guide, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to harvesters, and more partieularlyto the guide for the cutterbars thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a guide for the purpose mentioned, which is adjustably connected to the guards and also to the finger-bar.
The invention consists of a movable bar forming the rear member of the guide and carrying friction-rollers, a slotted and shouldered strap passing around the finger-bar and engaging said movable bar, bolts through the latter engaging slots in certain of the guards and lateral arms on the latter forming the front member of the guide, as well as of adjun etive and specific details and the eonstrue- I tion and arrangement of the above parts, and certain auxiliaries tending to enhance the mechanical completeness of the whole, all as hereinafter more fully described, and as illustrated inv the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a section of this improved cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the slotted straps. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of one of the guards and its lateral arms.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the main finger -bar; B, the guards bolted to the barA, as shown at C; D, a rearwardly-faciligshoulder formedinthe body of the guards; E, the reciprocating cutter-bar; and F, the knives carried by the latter and passing through slots G in the guards, the cutter-bar E being guided between the shoul der D and the front face of a guide, all as is common in devices of this character.
Coming now to the present invention, each guard B is provided with a shoulder l,whiel1 rests against the front edge of the finger-bar A, and the body of the guard is provided with lateral arms 2 at the points shown, having their extremities oppositely tongued and grooved or coneaved and convexed'so as to engage each other. The rear face of each arm 2 forms the shoulderD above mentioned, and is grooved, asA shown in the drawings. The cutter-bar E reciproeates' longitudinally just in rear of the grooved shoulder D, and the front edge of said cutter-bar is also grooved, as shown at 3. This cutter-bar is held, by means hereinafter described, above the shank 4 of each guard, and its groove 3 therefore stands opposite the groove'- in the resting upon the Shanks 4 of the guards B in front of their shoulders l, and jourualed on vertical pins G and seated in slots in this bar are friction-rollers 7, which bear against therear edge of the cutter-bar E, and thereby constitute the rear member of the guide. Bolts 8 may be passed through the removable bar 5, and their heads engage slots l0 in the guardsV B, whereby the movable bar 5 maybe adjusted forward and back upon the shanks 4 to press the cutter-bar forward when necessary. Ve prefer, however, to hold the movable bar 5 in position by means of a metallic strap 20, which passes around the finger-bar A, and whose lower end is provided with a vertical shoulder 2l and horizontal lip 22, while its upper end is bent upwardly at 23 and provided with a horizontal lip 24, as shown in the drawings. The upper and lower arms of this strap are provided with one or more aligned slots 25, through which pass IOO The cutter-bar E reciproeates between the above-described shoulder D at its front side and friction-rollers 7 at its rear side, and also between the lips 22 beneath it and 24 above it, as will be readily understood. lVhen it is desired to adjust the movable bar 5, the bolts 2G are loosened and the straps 2O moved as far as is necessary, after which the bolts are again tightened. If the bolts 8 are used, they are also loosened and tightened again after the adjusting has been accomplished. Vhen it is desired to replace a guard-finger, the cutter-bar is rst removed, and all that is necessary is to remove the bolt C, when the finger can be passed downwardly and disengaged from the supporting-bar in a manner which vwill be obvious.
The rollers 7 are preferably spaced fromeach other less than the length of reciprocation of the cutter-bar E, whereby the Wear upon the latteiwwill be even, as will be understood.
Vhat we claim is 1. In a harvester, the combination, with the finger-bar and the independent guard-fingersI detaehably connected thereto and having laterally-projecting arms engaging the arms on adjacent guards, the rear faces of said arms4 forming a shoulder, of a movable bar carr ing friction-rollers and standing in rear of said shoulder, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting said movable bar forward and back, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a harvester, the combination, with the finger-bar, and guard-iingers carried thereby and having a grooved shoulder upon their shanks, and with a movable bar carrying frietion-rol1ers, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting said movablebar forward and back, of the cutter-bar reciprocating between said shoulder and movable bar and having a groove in its front edge interlocking with that in the shoulder, as and for the purpose set forth.
`3. In a harvester, the combination, with the finger-bar, and guard-fingers carried thereby and having a grooved shoulder upon their Shanks, and-with a movable bar carrying frietion-rollers, an adjustable strap supporting 5o said movable bar, and integral lips thereon forward of the bar, of the cutter-bar reeiproeating between said shoulder and movable bar and between said lips and having a groove in its front edge registering with that in the shoulders, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a harvester, the combination, with the guard-fingers B, having the shoulders 1 on their shanks, the finger-bar A, bolted to said guards and against said shoulders, and the reciprocating cutter-bar E, of the adjustable guide mounted uponthe shan ks of said guards forward of said shoulders, andV means, substantially as described, for adjusting" it forward and back thereon, as set forth.
5. In aharvester, the combination, with the finger-bar A, of the movable bar 5, the metallic straps 20, inclosing said vbar A and supporting said movable bar at their front ends, the arms of these straps being provided with aligned slots 25, and bolts 26, passing throughsaid slots and through the body of the bar, substantially as described.
6. In a harvester, the combination, with the finger-bar A and the movable bar 5, of metallic straps 20, inclosin g said finger-bar and provided with aligned slots through their bodies,
an upwardly-bent portion 23 in the body of the upper member, between which said movable bar is clamped, as set forth.
i In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto aiiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
