W. F. KENDRIGK. MOP WRINGING ATTACHMENT FOR PAILS.
No. 434,344. Patent-ed Aug.'12,'1890 William FKendrz'ag UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NVILLIAM FRANCIS KENDRICK, OF WVIN FIELD, IOW'A, ASSIGNOR OF ON E- HALF TO HENRY L. GLASS, OF SAME PLACE.
MOP- WRl'N GlNG ATTACHMENT FOR PAILS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,344, dated August 12, 1 890.
Application filed May 23, 1890. $erial No. 352,890: (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANCIS KEN DRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Mop WVringing Attachment for Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to mop-wringing attachments for pails, and among the obects in view are to provide an extremely cheap and simple device adapted to be clamped to the side of a pail and adapted to hold the mop while the same is twisted by hand for the purpose of wringing said mop,
and to provide means for operating the attachment so as to grip and release the mop, said means being under the control of the foot of the operator.
With the above general objects in View the invention consists in'certain features of con struction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
- Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a pail provided with a wringing attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail, enlarged,of the operating-lever. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the bracket.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I provide a curved bracket-plate 1, which at one end and upon its inner side is extended to form a bearing-lug 2. The plate is curved to approximate the curvature of the wall of the pail, and at its outer side near its ends is provided with a pair of out'wardly and downwardly disposed hook-shaped embracing-arms 3, one of which at its lower end is provided with a bearing-ear at, in which is pivoted a cam-lever 5, as at 6. Upon the perforated bearing-ear 2, at the inner side of the bracket, there is pivoted, as at 7, a curved jaw 8, the end of which is inwardly bent, as shown, and the inner edge of the jaw is provided with a series of holding-teeth 9, which coact with the inner edge of the bracket 1, which is preferably also provided with a series of holdingteeth 10, oppositely disposed to those of the jaw and adapted to interlock with the same.
same, and therefore serves to actuate the jaw toward the bracket when the lever is depressed. The lever may terminate directly in a step or foot-plate, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, but in this instance is provided with an adjustable extension 16, which latter at its lower end terminates in a footplate 17, and is longitudinally slotted, as at 18, for the purpose of receiving a set-screw 19, mounted in the lower end of the inverted- L-shaped lever, and by which said extension may be adjusted so as to lengthen or shorten the operating-lever, as desired.
The upper end of the extension is provided with a pair of inwardly-disposed embracing- .ears 20, which ears take over the opposite sides of the inverted-L-shaped lever and serve as guides, and below said ears upon the extension there is formed upon the lever similar ears 21, which also serve to guide and make rigid the extension with the lever.
22 represents an ordinary pail, and the same is provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention, the embracing-arms 3 being introduced over the upper edge of the pail and the cam-lever operated to bind against the exterior of the pail. The mop having been immersed in the water of the'pail, the same is drawn sidewise betweeen the curved end of the jaw and the bracket, said j aw readily opening a sufficient distance to receive the mop. The operator now places his foot upon the foot-plate and depresses the L-shaped lever, which, acting in the manner as heretofore described, serves to draw the jaw inwardly toward the inner edge of the bracket, and the teeth of the jaw and bracket engaging the mop serve to hold the head firmly while the handle is twisted by the operator. In this manner the water is wrung from the mop, and it simply remains to release the jaw by removing the foot from the foot-plate, which act serves to release the mop-head, and the latter is withdrawn from between the jaw and bracket.
The attachment, it will be observed, consists of exceedingly few number of parts, which are of a very simple construction, and
may be cheaply and conveniently cast, it desired. The application of the device to the pail will be readily understood by any one and its advantages appreciated when used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a mop-wringer attachment, the combination, with a curved bracket-plate adapted to be attached to a pail and a curved jaw pivoted upon the bracket, of an inverted-L- shaped lever pivoted to the bracket and terminating at its inner end in a downwardlycurved finger for operating the jaw and at its opposite end terminating in a foot-plate, substantially as specified.
2. In a wringer attachment, the combinaiion, with a curved plate or bracket adapted for attachment to a pail and a curved toothed jaw pivoted to said plate or bracket, of an inverted- L-shapedlever pivoted to the attachment and terminating at its inner end in a downwardly-disposed and inwardly-curved j aw-operating finger and at its opposite end provided with an adjustable extension terminating in a foot-plate, substantially as specified.
3. In a wringer attachment, the combination, with a curved bracket-plate, the outer side of which is provided with a pairof hookshaped embracing-arms adapted to embrace the pail, of a cam-shaped lever pivoted to one of the arms, an inverted-L-shaped lever mounted in the bracket-plate and terminating at its inner end in an inwardly-curved depending finger and at its outer end in a foot-plate, and a toothed curved jaw pivoted upon the bearing-lug, adapted to be operated by the finger and to coaet with the inner edge of the bracket or plate, substantially as specified. I
4. In a wringer attachment, the combination, with the curved bracket, one end of which is provided with a perforated bearing-lug and the outer edge of which is provided with a pair of curved pail-embracing arms, one of which is provided with a perforated lug and the other with bearing-ears, of a cam-locking lever pivotedin the lug and an inverted-L- shaped lever pivoted in the ears and terminating at its inner end in an inwardly-curved finger, a curved and toothed jaw pivoted upon the bearing-lug of the bracket, and an extension terminating at its lower end in a footplate and at its upper end in embracing-ears mounted on-the lower end of the lever, said extension being provided with alongitudinal slot and a set-screw mounted in the slot and in the lever, substantially as specified.
5. In a wringer attachment, the combination, with the stationary and pivoted jaws adapted to coact to hold the mop, said jaws being provided with a clamp for attachment to a pail, of an operating-lever engaging the pivot-ed jaw and extending outside the pail and provided with a foot-plate, as set forth.
6. In a wringer attachment, the combination, with the stationary and pivoted jaws adapted to coact to hold the mop, said jaws being provided with a clamp for attachment to a pail, of an operating-lever engaging the pivoted jaw and extending outside the pail and provided with a foot-plate, said lever bein g extensible and adjustable, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM FRANCIS KENDRIOK.
