HENRY W. MEINHARDT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRED M. IKUNZ, OF HELENA', MONTANA.
GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,191, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed April 2l, 1890.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. MEINHARDT, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompany- -ing drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has for its object to provide io a certain new and useful improvement in the construction of gate-latches, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied toa gate.
i 5 Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the device,
and Fig. 3 shows a modification of my invention.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 represents the ordinary fence-posts having zo the usual jamb 2 fastened thereto, against which the gate abnts in closing.
3 3 represent the upright posts of the gate, having horizontal pieces 6 6 fastened thereto, which with the usual pickets constitute the 2 5 gate.
9 is a vertical shaft, which has upon its upper end a handle 5 and a pinion 13 keyed thereto below the handle and below the up per horizontal beam 6, which pinion holds 3o said handle in position. To the lower end of the shaft 9 is also secured a second handle 10, extending therefrom at a right angle, as a further means for operating the lock of the gate should it be necessary.
35 16 is a bolt, having the usual inclined face portion 3, said bolt passing through an opening in the gatepost. To the opposite end of the bolt 16 is attached to or formed integral therewith a rack-bar 12 which when in po- 4o sition comes in contact or meshes with the pinion 13.
7 is a staple, fastened to the under surface of thel horizontal piece 6, through which the bolt moves in operation, and which also holds 45 it in position and acts as a guide therefor.
A coiled spring 11 eneircles the bolt 16 and Serial No. 348,768. (No model.)
is interposed between the shoulder formed by the head of the bolt and the staple and which spring tends to force the bolt into a suitable cavity or depression formed 1n the 5o adjacent fence-post when the gate is 1n a closed position. n
In Fig. 3 a modification of my invention 1s shown, and in this case I connect one endof a cord or chain 15 to the bolt, the opposite 55 end of which chain or cord is connected to a pulley or drum 14., which drum when turned will withdraw the bolt. A casing 4 is secured to the under surface of the beam 6, by which means the operative parts of the lock are ef- 6o fectually covered and protected.
In operation it will be seen that by turning either one of the handles 5 or 1() the bolt 16 will be withdrawn from a locked position, the spring 1l forcing the bolt outward, when 65 the handles are released.
lVhat I claim isl. The combination, with a gate having a revoluble vertical shaft thereon forming a picket therefor, the shaft having cogs there- 7o on, of a bolt carried by the said gate and having a rack-bar thereon gearing with the cogs upon the said shaft, as described. r
2. The combination, with a gate having a revoluble vertical shaft thereon forming-a 75 picket therefor, of a bolt carried by the said gate and actuated by a rotation of the said shaft, as described.
3. A hand opening device for gates, consisting of the upright shaft Sl, carrying handles 8o 5 and 10 and pinion 13, in combination with a lock-bolt carrying a spring 11, said spring being compressibly located between a staple 7 and a shoulder on said bolt, and said rackbar and said pinion meshing with each other, 8 5 substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY \V. MEINHARDT.
Witnesses:
JNO. C. HIGDON, C. K. JoNEs.
