Description

(No Model.)
F. I. SHERMAN.
FASTENING DBVICEJE'OB. STUDS, &c.
Patented Aug. 12
INVENTOR- WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK I. SHERMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR STUDS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,138, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed Aprillg, 1890. Serial No. 348,725. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK I. SHERMAN, of the cityand county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastening Devices for Studs, Sleeve-Bnttons, and Similar Articles; and I declare the following to be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Like letters indicate like parts.
Figure l is a side elevation of a stud having my improvement, and is shown with the sliding bar in position for entering the eyelethole of a shirt-bosom. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line x 00 of Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of said stud with the sliding bar in position to lock the stud in the eyelet-hole.
My invention is applicable to studs, sleevebuttons, ear-drops, and similar articles.
It consists in providing the front portion of such an article with a shank or post with a tube attached to said shank or post, in combination with a sliding bar adj ustably held in said tube by friction, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the front knob or ornamental head of the stud.
B is the shank or post, and C is a hollow wire or tube. A bar D is made of bent or split wire, having a ball a on one end, and is open or sprung apart at b and c. The parts The bar D is then pushed up through the tube 0 to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus preventing the withdrawal of the stud from the shirt-bosom. The loop or spring I), as seen in Fig. 1, holds the bar D in the position there shown with sufficient force to prevent the accidental sliding of the bar during the process of insertion, and when the bar is pushed up through the tube into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 the compression of the spring 0 within the tube, as seen in Fig. 2 in cross-section, holds the bar frictionally and prevents its displacement.
This fastening device is applicable to eardrops, and also to sleeve-studs and other but tons. If necessary, the bar may be widened to form a rear plate or shoe, and the opening in the tube changed to correspond in shape.
It is evident that the bar D may be frictionally held in the tube C by fitting snugly therein, or by any suitable spring other than that particularly shown and specified.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The fastening device for studs, buttons, and similar articles herein described, consisting of the knob, the shank extending from the back surface thereof, the tube extending at a right angle from the end of said shank, and the bar formed of wire and having a loop at one end, a terminal ball at the other, and an intermediate bow-spring, said bar being movable longitudinally in said tube, and adapted by its said spring to engage frictionally with said tube, substantially as specified.
FRANK I. SHERMAN. Vitnesses:
DANIEL W. FINK, WARREN R. Panels.
