OIL-FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,113, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed April 29, 1890. Serial No. 349,921. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Beit known that I, CASPER MUELLER, of Boston, county of Suolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Oil- Feeders,of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and 'ligures on the drawings representingr like parts.
This invention relates to oil-feeders forengines, and has for its object to provide an oil-feeder of novel construction, as will be hereinafter pointed out in the claims at the end of this Specilication.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of an oil-feeder embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a detail in side elevation of the lower portion of the feeder shown in Fig. 1, looking toward the left in said figure; Fig. 3, a detail of the regulator, and Fig. e a sectional detail on line a: Fig. 2.
The oil-receiving chamber or receptacle of the feeder is herein shown as a globe A, preferably of glass. The globe A is provided with substantially diametrically-opposite openings, normally closed by covers a a', the cover a. being herein shown as provided with an annular groove c2 in its upper face to receive an annular liange co3 on the globe A. The cover a has on its upper side an annular flange or tubular extension a, provided, as herein shown, with screw-threads on its inner and outer sides. The tubular extension CL4 is engaged on its inner side with a sleeve or tube a5 extended up through the opening in the top of the globe Aand outside of the said globe.l The said Sleeve or tube has screwed into it a hollow regulating-plug b, having its lower portion made plain and provided with a cam-Shaped slot b', provided, as herein Shown, at its highest point (See Fig. 3) with a notch b2, adapted to receive a piu or proj ection b3 on a Spindle b4 extended through the hollow plug b and sleeve a5, the said spindle preferably having its lower end made conical or pointed to iit a conically-shaped Seat and close the outlet-opening b5 for the globe A, the said opening being preferably formed in an independent nozzle b secured to the'under side of the cover a. The spindle b4 below the endof the h ollow plug b is encircled by a spiral spring o7, one end of which abuts against the said hollow plug and the other end against a pin bf extended through the spindle, but it may be a collarv on said spindle. The spring b7 acts to force the spindle b4 down 'toward its Seat at all times. The out let-nozzle h6 for the globe A is extended into a chamber c, having two of its opposite sides preferably cast integral with the cover a', and,
with a discharge-nozzle c forming the bottom of the chamber o. The two opposite sides of the chamber c are made of glass or other transparent material, the said sides forming sight-windows c3, which are removable, but are normally locked in place by the thumbscrew c5, pivoted on one side of the chamber c, and having arms which lap over or extend beyond the edge of the Said Side and fasten the removable windows in place, the rear edge of the said windows abutting against the projecting edges 0X of the opposite side, as clearly Shown in Fig. 4. The Windows c3 may be readily removed by turning the thumbscrew substantially at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 4. The hollow tube a5 is provided withsuitable feed-holes 2, through which oil in the globe may pass into the said tube. rIhe hollow plug constitutes a regulator to determine the quantity of oil to be 'fed to the bearing to be oiled, and this plug in practice will be screwed down into the tube a5 more orless, and will be fastened in adjusted position bya set-screw 3. The further the said plug is screwed down the less the feed. When the feed is to be stopped altogether, the spindle b4 will be turned in a direction toy permit it to descend under the action of spring bl and close the outlet b5, as in Fig. 1.
To enable a Stream of oil to be fed, lift the spindle and rotate it partially until the pin b3 enters the notch b2, as in Fig. 3, and a sufficient quantity of oil having been discharged, the spindle will be further turned to place the pin bin the regular feed-notch 4, (herein Shown as the end of the groove b at the left in Fig. 5,) the spindle in this last position permitting the oil to be delivered in regulated quantity.
The sight-windows may be easily removed to be cleaned by turning the thumb-screw.
I claiml. In an oil-feeder, the globe, the covers a a', the delivery-tube b5, the tube a5, the spin- LOO dle having a pin b3 and a spring to normally depress the saidA spindle, combined with the hollow regulating-plug, having a cam-slot entered by the said pin, the said cam-slot having two notches to be entered by the said pin, one notch to insure the discharge of oil in regulated quantity and the other to enable a stream to be discharged, substantially as described.
2. In an oil-feeder, the chamber c, having open sides and sight-windows c3 to close the same, combined with the thumb-screw c5, having arms to overlap the edges of and keep the sight-Windows in place, the said Windows abutting against the projecting edges of the x5 opposite side, substantially as described.
