Description

(No Model.)
S. F. STEVER.
WRENGH.
Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON F. STEVER, OF FAIRFIELD, IOWVA.
WRENCH.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,004, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed December 14, 1889. Serial NO. 333 801. (No model.)
TO all whom it may conaern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON F. STEVER, a citiZen of the United States, rcsiding at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson' and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in XVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to Wrenches.
The object is to produce a wrench Which While Operating to turn a nut or Other object to which Wrenches are applied will .at the same time serve to compress a spring or move or release a detent,
The invention consists in a Wrench having, with the usual jaws, an interposed shorter tine, a nib, or bit, or tongue, projecting bclow or beyond the plane of the jaWs.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention.
Figure l is aperspective view of a wrench, showing the tongue between the tines of a fork-Wrench. Fig. 2 s an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing a mode of application of my improved wrench.
The Wrench may be of any form, so that there is an interposed bit or tongue between the jaws projecting beyond their plane and capable of producing the desired effect.
I have shown the improvement as applied to an ordinary fOrk-Wrench A, the bit, tongue, or short tine being marked a and being shown as protruding from between the forks and projecting below their plane.
NVhile my wrench is of general application, as described, I particularly desire to employ it in connection With my improved ratchet nut-lock, forming the subject-matter of anapplication filed of even date herewith, and to use it With this mit-look the jaws of the Wrench are placed in contact With faces of the nut in such manner that the bit Will be inserted Over the spring into the notch of the nut, which is immediately Over the spring of the washer, When upon depression of the Wrench the spring Will be pressed down out of contact with the teeth of the ratchet and the nut may be unscrewed.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A Wrench having a bit a between its jaWs and projecting below or beyond their plane, substantially as described.
Intestimony Whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
