W. P. HUMPHREYS. JOINT CONNECTION FOR SUGTION PIPES AND PROTECTORS 0F DREDGERS.
No. 433,943. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
dilarmy mum wasumcrau n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. V
\VILLIAM PENN HUMPHREYS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR,
BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO A. M. STINOEN, OF SAME PLACE.
JOINT-CONNECTION FOR SUCTION-PIPES AND PROTECTORS 0F DREDGERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,943, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed December 9,1889- Serial No. 333,149- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM PENN HUM- PHREYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slip-Joint Connections for Suction-Pipes and'Protectors of Dredgers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates, generally, to improvements in dredging apparatus, and has particular reference to 'a novel manner of connecting the suction-pipe to the dredge-boat by a secondary orauxiliary joint or connection, whereby two connections can be availed of in use-that is, the ordinary universal joint and a separate connection; also, whereby the strain upon the universal j ointis relieved and the strength is greatly increased. It has particular adaptability for use with a re-enforced suction-pipe, whichI have made the subjectmatter of an application for patent filed November 18, 1889, Serial No. 330,677, and in carrying my present invention into practice in connection therewith I cast with or affix to the re-enforce or jacket a projection which slips upon the boat or scow and permits the movement of the suction-pipe. A suitable means is employed for confining the projection in its movementsas, for instance, a slot in it, through which a' pin with an enlarged head is passedor it may be used with a staple or loop set over the projection instead of the slot and pin. I may also provide rollers beneath the projection to facilitate the movetion of the connection to the boat, showing sponding parts in all-the figures where they occur.
Only so much of the mechanism of the dredger is shown as is necessary to illustrate the use of my present invention.
The manner of manipulating the suctionpipe and operating the cutter can be seen in my patents of December 10, 1889, No. 417,186.
A is the end of the scow. B is the suction-pipe mounted in the manner set forth in patent granted to me on the 10th of December, 1889, No. 417,186, and of the construction as to jacket shown and claimed in application filed NovemberlS, 1889, above referred to.
The re-enforce on the suction -pipe is marked 0.
D is the projection or arm, which is cast with or aifix'ed to the suction-pipe and extended upon the boat and held in such a manner as to be capable of slipping or movement to accommodate the movements of the suction-pipe. For this purpose I may provide a slot in the projection or arm, as shown at d, and pass a pin E with an enlarged head through it, or I may employ a staple or loop F and set it over the arm, as shown in Fig. 3, or other means may be adopted for making the slip-joint. The arm or projection is preferably hinged in all the forms. This connection may be applied to the re-enforee form of S5 protector, whether extending all round or only part way round the suction-pipe, or to a suction-pipe without any protector, or to the jacket form of protector shown in my patent of December 10, 1889, No. 417,186, as shown 0 in Fig. 5. I may also provide rollers G G under the arm or projection to facilitate its movement, as shown in Fig. 4. These will preferably be affixed to the deck of the barge,
but may be casters or rollers upon the arm itself.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire tosecure lo y Letters Patent, 1s
