F. STANKE.
SHIPS DRAG.
No. 308,211. Patented Nov. 1 1884.
N. PELERS. Phclohthognphm. wum c.
FLORIAN STANKE, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHIPS DRAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,211, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed December 22, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLORIAN STANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Ships Drag for Dredging Rivers and Estuaries, of which the following is a specification.
The nature and object of myinvention is to provide an attachment to ships, steamboats, barges, 820., whereby rivers and estuaries may be dredged and raked and the mud and debris at the bottom thereof be stirred up and carried away by the currents and tides. This object I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my drag. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the teeth of my drag; Fig. 8 is an end view of the drag, showing it in position upon the river-bed. Fig. 4 is an end View of the drag, showing its position when in operation.
Similar letters of reference are used to indicate like parts throughout the several views.
A represents a frame or fiat bar of iron, and jointed midway by a knuckle-joint, B, and pin a, so that both arms, or one of the arms, will drop from a. horizontal to an inclined position in passing over an uneven surface. At suitable intervals along the iron bars are bolt ed the peculiarly-constructed teeth or agitators, which consist of a beak, C, rounded in front, and provided at the back portion with a groove inclining from the edges of the tooth to.the center, so that in operation an eddy will be formed at the back of the teeth by the action of the water, and hold the mud longer (No model.)
cal standard, E, having a square base, which enters a hole in the bar or frame, in which po sition it is held to the frame by a nut, c. The ends of the arms which form a part of the teeth are all made sharp or pointed in front, as shown at F, so that in coming against obstacles, such as hard-pan or clay, these will cut through in advance of the beak of the teeth. At suitable intervals along the jointed framework are placed shoes G, which always keep thedrag in a certain position or angle of inclination, and so that the'teeth will always have a hold upon the bottom of the river, yet at the same time prevent the device from embedding itself in the soft mud.
Suitable eyebolts, H, are connected to the frame,to which are attached chains 1), for hauling the drag, and these chains are in turn connected to the stern of the boat or vessel in any suitable manner, and the drag permitted to sink and be towed from point to point, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The drag or dredger provided with the peculiarly-constructed teeth having a groove in the rear part of the cutting-beak and a cutting-poiut, F, and adapted to fit into an iron frame, and operate in the mannerand for the purpose as herein shown and set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the jointed frame, iusertible grooved teeth, and sustaining-shoes, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner as here in set forth and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
