Description
A. G. LARR. BOAT FOR SEA LLOW WATERS. OATION FILED JUNE 19, 1907.
AliLI I Patented May-18, 1909.
Snvenl'oz UNITE STATES PATENT an on.
AUSTIN C. LARR, 0F LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
BOAT FOR SHALLOW WATERS.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN C. LARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boats for Shallow ater's,-
' tegrated'portions of the bar and throw it.
upon one side thus excavating through the bar a passage for the main body portion of the boat.
' A further object of the invention is to arrange the propelling mechanism so that it will aid in conveying out of the depth of the boat the dislodged material thus making it unnecessary to supply a double mechanism.
The invention consists of a boat having a reduced prow portion upon the sides of which are secured a fiume the prow having a sheer and the propellers being arranged at the rearward ends of the flumes thereby causing a rapid flow of water through them carrying with it the displaced material and throwing the same upon either side of the boat.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the forward portion of a boat portions being in section. Fig. 2 is a side view, a portion of the flume being broken away and partly shown in section.
In these drawings A represents the boat having a prow portion A reduced in width and provided at its forward end with a plow B adapted to excavate through a bar of sand or other similar material.
In the rear of the prow and upon each side of" the reduced portion of the prow I arrange fiumes C open at each end. The forward end of each being provided with slats C which prevent obstructions from entering the flame and fouling the propeller. A sheer A is formed upon the prow A which sheer Specification of Letters Patent. Application am June 19, 1907. Serial No. 379,724.
Patented May 18, 1909.
forms the rearward and inner Wall for the fiumes, which therefore open atv their rear ends at an oblique angle to the keel of the vessel. Suitable propeller shafts D extend into these fiumes also obliquely with respect to the keel and these shafts carry propeller blades D. They are driven by engines E of any type and to aid in the forcing of water through the fiumes and the removal of the sand or other dislodged material I provide a pump E, and a suction. pipe F which takes the water from the under side of the prow and discharges it through two discharge pipes F which extend forwardly and pass out through opposite sides of the prow and.
then bend downwardly and rearwardlydischarging water in the direction of the mouth of the flumes and thus aiding in creating a rapid current through the flumes which will carry away all sand and other materials thrown up by the plow B.
It will be obvious that any form of propel-lers may be employed and any suitable style of engines and pumps that is desired, thejets of water thrown by the pipes F may be dispensed with and the propellers only depended upon to cause rapid circulation of water through the flame.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is ze The combination with a vessel having its forward end portion reduced in width, flumes formed upon said reduced portion and upon opposite sides of the boat, said fiulnes being open at each end and discharging rearwardly in "an oblique direction with respect to the keel of the boat, propellers arranged at the rearward ends of the flumes, and means for discharging jets of water in advance of the flumes and downwardly and rearwardly, as and for the purpose set forth.
AUSTIN c. LARR.
