STEM WINDING AND SETTING WATGH. I
No. 433,289. Patented July 29, 1890.
1V1 finesse-o: 60d 671/11 I /l I Q fluozmud- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
STEM WINDING AND SETTING WATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed August 14:, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, BERNARD IIEIDBRINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Watches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in Watches 5 and it has relation particularly to an improvement in mechanism for winding and setting the watch, so that the movement may be rendered interchangeable for application to a case, whether arranged for a hunting-case watch or an open-face watch. In watches as commonly constructed a different arrangement is made for the winding and setting mechanism of a hunting-case watch from that of one having an open face. The stem in the former is arranged radially from the figure 3, and that of the latter being placed radially from the figure 12, representing time, respectively. In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of the face side of a watch-movement with the winding and setting mechanism exposed to view for a crystal face. Fig. 2 is a similar-view of a watch with the arrangement applicable to ahunting-case watch. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the back of a watch with the mechanism exposed as applicable to a crystal-face arrangement. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through the yoke K.
Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in all of the figures.
Referring to the drawings, K is a yoke pivoted at a in a hunting-case arrangement, and at a in the open-face arrangement, having three wings or arms a b 0, each provided with axis-points centrally located, respectively.
A is a minute-wheel provided with a pinion a each having gear-teeth. This wheel and pinion is interchangeable for two positions in the frame of the movement, the one, as in Fig. 2, for a hunting-case arrangement, and the other, as at Fig. 1, for the open face arrangement upon the pin 0 II is the winding-wheel journaled in the cock I, fixed to the movement-frame. On the side of the movement-frame opposite the wind- Patent 110.433,,289, dated July 29, 1890.
Serial No. 320,684. (No model.)
ing-wheel H is the cap L, (see Fig. 3,) the teeth of which engage the pinion f of thehandarbong. Connected with the arbor and pinv Pivoted in the frame of the movement of the watch at the outer edge is a lever 1, provided with a forked end and a pointed end which passes through the winding-pinion a".
z" is a lever pivoted beneath the lever t, provided with a forked end and a pin m to be engaged-by the said fork in, one of the prongs of said fork being shorter than the other.
p is a pin projecting inward from the arm a of the yoke K and through a slot m in the movement-frame within reach of the fork of the lever t.
p is a spindle which connects with the crown M of the stem M through the latter and within reach of the lever t. The lever i is under the influenceof a spring klsecured to the movement-frame, and in turn the lever t" is under the influence of the said lever 1'.
About the axis of the yoke K is arranged a gear-wheel (shown in dotted lines in the drawings) adapted to engage the windingpinion 03 00. An intermediate gear wheel is arranged to engage the winding-wheel H and the minute-Wheel A directly (as in the hunting-case arrangement) and indirectly through gear-wheel d d, as in the open-face arrangement. The wheel cl is pivoted on pin at Z in the movement-frame, and a pin 0 also in said movement-frame, is intended to form the axis of the wheel A, as in the hunting-case arrangement.
WVhen the yoke K is fixed for the huntingcase arrangement, it being pivoted opposite 3 of the dial, the arms or wings CL and o are both provided with gear-wheels. The one, d, may now en gage the wheel H when the crooked lever is pushed in, and when the said lever is drawn out the wheel cl will engage the Wheel A for setting purposes. It is-understood, of course, that the yoke K is rocked about its axis by the engagement of the short arm i with the notch 91 in the yoke, so that when the wheel d is engaged by the wheel H the wheel d is out of mesh with the wheel A, so that the pinion a will not be operative with the setting mechanism.
In the arrangement of the open-face watch the yoke K is pivoted ata point opposite the twelve points of the dial, the arm hot the yoke K carries the wheel (1', and the wheel d is pivoted upon the stud Z The stud in the arm a for wheel (I, as in the hunting-casearrangement, now projects through a slot m, andis in fact the pin 19, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. In this arrangement the spindle attached to crown M within the stem M has a movement radially to a limited eX- tent, and when said crown is pressed inward the said spindle comes in contact with the lever i. The fork of said lever '6 clasping the pin m of lever 71 the latter is moved, and its fork clasping the pin 19 of the yoke-arm a the wheel (1 is brought to engagement with the winding-wheel H. Drawing the spindle of the stem out releases the lever i, which now receives the influence of the spring 70 As the motion of said lever i is communicated to the lever 2", the pin 19 is pushed by the fork of said lever t" to bring the Wheel d to engagement with the Wheel d, which latter communicates its motion when the crown M is revolved to operate the setting mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a watch, the interchangeable pivoted yoke having three arms or wings provided with a notch in one, to be engaged by a shifting-lever, and all three of said arms or wings arranged for gear-wheels, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination. with the triple yoke pivoted opposite the first quarter-point of the dial and the gear-wheels d d, of the windingwheel H, a gear-wheel about the pivotof said yoke, the setting-pinion 0c, the minute-wheel A, a rotary spindle within the watclrstem, the cap L, and the wheel and pinion connected therewith, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the yoke, a gearwheel arranged about said point as an axis, the winding-pinion 0c, the pin 13 in said yoke pro j ectingthrou gh a suitable slot in the move ment-frame, the levers t' i, the spring k, and the spindle in the stem and the wheel cl in the arm I), of the Winding-wheel II, the wheel I), the wheel A, the cap L, and the pinion and wheel f h, whereby when the yoke is shifted by the withdrawal or the pushing of the said stein-spindle the wheel cl will be brought in proper relation with the setting or winding wheel to set or wind the watch from the stem, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD l-IEIDBRINK.
