Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK R. ALFORD, OF WINSTED, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WM. L. GILBERT CLOCK COMPANY, OF WINSTED, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT? Speccationof Letters Patent.
CLOCK.
Patented Nov. 12, 1967.
Application tiled October 29. 1906. Serial No. 340.992.
to alarm clocks in which there are suitable time trainslor operating hour, minute and second hands,` the alarm train for operating the alarm and the alarm-set-indicato; mounted in front of the dia-L The invention is of especial utility in connection with clocks oi small s ize, for instance what is known in the trade as the two-inch movement, and its particular advantages being that it allows oi the use of a second hand and provides a much more accurate alarm-setting indicator than is possible by the usual setting devices.
In the drawings-Eigure l is a front view of a clock Vwith parts broken away to show constriu-tion. Fig. 2
is a detail sectional view illustrating the application of d my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the cam Wheel. Referring to the drawings a is the in imite-hand, b the hour-hand and c the second-hand, all driven by a timetrain oi ordinary construction and arrangement.
d is the dial. l e is the indicator secured to a sleeve which surrounds the minuto-hand stati; secured to this sleeve just under the dial is the cam-wheel f having a hub g with a camnotch g" with which cooperates a pin hon one oi'the wheels i of the time-train to thehub of which the minnte-hand a is secured. The spring IL" exerts a pressure on the wheel 'L' 1.o raise-it. when 'the pin h comes opposite *the cam-notch y. This wheel i is driven from the inimlte\vlut.\lj through the pinion j in the usual manner.
As a means for setting the time-hamis and also the alarm-indicatorL 1 provide a. longitudinally movable shaft 'nt at the end ol' which there is mounted a pair oi piuions n n of diii'erent sizes, the alarm-set pinion n 40 being adapted to mesh with thc -"aiii\\'lieelf and the time-set' pinion 1t being adapted to mesh with the minute-wheel j. These two pinions are located close together on the shalt. m Iand but one oi them can be in mesh with its cooperating wheel at a time,
By providing a setting device, such as hereindescribed, the size of the cam-wheel f is.reduced so as to permit of the use of a second-hand shaft.
The time-set and alarm-set are entirel)` independent of one another except for the fact that they are both mounted on the same operating shaft and it is impossible to have hut one of the setting trains operative at a ti1ne.`
The construction is cheaper than the usual construction inasmuch as these setting pinions can be blanked out of sheet metal and the size ot'vthc cam-wheel is greatly reduced.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with an alarm clock having hour, minute and second hands and nn nlnrmsetimlicator located in front of the dial. oi independent means for setA tingr the time-hands und the ainrin-indicator. but one of said settingr means being operative ut u time and a common actuating device for said setting means.
L. 'lhe combination with un alarm clock having hour. minute and second hands und an` ularm-set-lndientor lo-` cated in front ot lthe dini, ot u longitudinally movnbie shnit, und independent means mounted on said shaft voperntive one :1t :t time for setting saidV timefhandsand said alarm-indicator.
3. 'llu` combination with nn niurm clock having hour, minute and second hands and un niurm-set-indiea tor located in 'front of the dial, of n cam-wheel located underneath the dini and connected with said indicator, n minute-wheel connected with the time-train.` the periphery of suld minute-wheel extending ontside'of the periphery 75 oi Isaid cum-wheel, a longitudinally movable shaft. und' piunns mounted on said shaft, one of said pinions being adapted for engagement with said cam-wheel und the other for engagement with said minute-\vlnei. substnm tuliy :is described and for the purposes set forth.
4. 'ihe combination with un darm clock having a.4 minute-hund stulT, un hour-hand rotutnble nbont said' statt. an ainrmset-indicator located in front of the dial und mounted to rotate about snid staff, a cum-wheel lo-v cated underneath said dial und huving a sleeve on wh ch said intlieutor is mounted. u second-hund stati? and a secondhand carried thereby, independent means operative om` at n time lor setting the tinnehnnds und the ulurn1- 'indication'. and a common uctunting device for snld setting means.
iu testimony' whereot I :tiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
