Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES M. OONNEL, OF NEWARK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND H.
ESHBAUGH.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIN-PUMP CHAINS. Y
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,256, dated June 21, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JAMEs M. CoNNEL, of Newark, in the county of -Licking and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Chain- Pump Chains; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a portion of my improved chain-pump chain. Fig. 2 is a perspective sectional view of one ofthe links of the chain with a bucket fastened upon it ac; cording to my plan. Fig isa horizontal seotion of the link shown in Fig. 3 at a point above the bucket.
Similar letters of reference in the different figures indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to so construct the bucket-links of .a chain-pump chain that said links shall have two thicknesses of metal or wire throughout their lengths, and the ends ot' such metal or wire shall be united by and within the solid body which forms the bucket, in such manner that while the bucket ties the cnds of the link together the ends of the link serve as a lirm support and hold fast to the bucket.
Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
In making chain pump chains it is found desirable that the two eyes or looping-holes of each link shall run at right angles to one another. My chain-pump chain, therefore, will be constructed on this plan.
It also is necessary in chain-pumps to have several bucketless links between every pair of bucket-links. This being so, it is important to have the bucket links perform all the functions that I have attributed tomy improved bucket-link and at the same time adapted for use in connection with bucketless links which have but one thickness of metal intermediate their eyes or looping ends.
By examining the drawings it will be seen that my bucket-links A are formed of a piece 0f wire by bending one end of it around and over against the side of that portion which forms the body of the link, andthe otherend around and upon the top of the said body portion. The wire thus bent presents eyes or loops running at right angles to one another.
Those portion's of the wire which are bent over extend to the middle of the length of the body portion, and at the terminus of each a right angle is formed by bending the wire out from the body portion of the link, as indicated at a a, thus forming horizontal supports at the middle of the link. The link thus formed (being of wrought metal) is placed in a mold adapted for its reception and for the molding of a cylindrical or other shaped bucket. Around the central portion ot' the link the metal which is to form the bucket C is poured in any of the well-known modes of casting.
In this manner the necessary number of bucket-links are made.
Y It will be seen that the firmest connection between the cast and wrought metals is effected by means of the lugs or bent ends a a, said ends extending laterally into the `mass of metal of which the bucket C is cast, and at the same time the link is made as strong as an endless link.
The bucketless links B are made in the ordinary manner and looped to the bucket links, as represented.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A chain-pump chain-link, A, constructed with lugs or bent portions ct a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Tying the ends of a chain-pump chainlink together by means of buckets C, cast about the middle portion 'oi' the link, substantially as set forth.
3. A chain-pump bucket-link, A a a C, constructed substantially as and for the purpose described. i
Witness my hand in matter of my application for a patent for improvement in chainpump chains.
J. M. CONNEL.
