B. SERGEANT.
WAGON POLE GAP.
Patent ed Nov. 24
W552 ass as Nirnn nrnnir rrricnl RAPHAEL SERGEANT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER BROTHERS & PHILLIPS, OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON POLE'. CAP.
V SPECIFICATIQN forming part I To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that'l, RAPHAEL SERGEANT, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Wagon-Pole Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in caps for the ends of wagon-poles, and has for its object to better and cheapen their manufacture.
A pole-cap made according to my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a side view of the same attached to the end of a pole. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each. 7
Heretofore the cap, when forged or wrought, has been made in form of a single fork of metal, which fits over the end of the wagonpole, and has at its outer end a ring or loop similar to that marked a in the drawings. Besides this, aseparate stop or clip, corresponding to the part b, has been usually bolted to the pole just back of the cap. The purpose of the clip is to hold a ring which, when slipped over the end of the pole and secured to chains or straps, serves to connect the collars of the horses with the pole.
My invention consists in making the clip I) integral with the pole-cap by bending the metal so that the fibers thereof shall follow the line of curvature. For this purpose the lower branch, 0, of the cap is bent outward and'then of Letters Patent No. 331,007, dated November 2%, 1885. Application filed July 10, 1895.
Serial No. 171,215. (No model.)
reflexed, as shown in the drawings, so as to form the clip of proper form, this being done, preferably, while forging the cap. The bend of the cap where it fits over the end of the pole e is hammered or bent into the form of the loop a. Thus made the cap is bolted or otherwise fastened to the pole, the branch (1 being laid upon the upper'side, and the other branch, 0, along the lower side thereof.
The cap is made of strap-iron curved in cross-section to conform to the curvature of the pole, though it may of course be made of other suitable style of metal. Its advantages when made according to my improvement are thatitis stronger and more perfectly protects the pole than if the cap and the clip be made separate, while the cost of manufacture ismaterially lessened.
I am aware that caps formed of malleable metal have been cast having the clip integral therewith. These, however, are of little practical use, owing to the weakness of the parts, and I do not desire to claim the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wagon-pole cap made of a single piece of metal, one arm of which is bent to form a lug or stop, the fiber of the metal following the line of curvature, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of July, A. D. 1885.
' RAPHAEL SERGEANT.
