UNITED STATES \VILLIAM G. MARTINEAU,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ALBANY, NEIV YORK.
COMBINED BOOK-MARK AND LEAF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,189, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed April 17, 1890. Serial No. 348,354. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. MA TL N EAU, of the city of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Book- Marks and Leaf- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices known as book-leaf holders, with which is combined a book-mark; and it consists, broadly, of the single thin plate or blank of some springy or elastic substance or composition fitted to be attached to the cover of a book formed with an arm or arms adapted to clasp the said cover together with any desired number of leaves, and provided with one or more strips of flexible material adapted to be inserted between the leaves to serve as a bookmark.
In the single plate of drawings, containing three figures, which accompanies this specification my invention is shown as applied to a book with a longitudinally-opening cover, as it is expected that the device will be especially useful for those who, like stenograpliers, employ this style of book but it will be evident that it can be modified so as to apply to books having laterally-opening covers.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the blank composing the leaf-holder, the dotted lines showing the arms B B bent to clasp the bookcover. Fig. 2 shows a book with theleafholder and book-mark attached, the body of the holder being indicated by .dotted lines. Fig. 3 shows the outside of a book-cover with the leaf-holder and bookmark attached, the extent of the arms B 13 before being bent to clasp the cover, being indicated by dotted lines.
B is a blank formed of some springy or elastic substance or compound, preferably in one piece, having at one end a strip 13, provided with the eyelet-holes b b to afford means for securing it to a book-cover, and at the other end a strip B provided with the arms or extremities B B To form the holder,
these arms B B are doubled back upon themselves, as shown in Fig. l by the dotted lines. B is secured to the cover 0 of a book by staples R R, passing through I) b and fastened to C. One or both of these staples also secure one or more strips of flexible material M, adapted to be used for indicating one or more places in the book, as may be desired.
The leaf-holder is used as follows: It is fastened, as above set forth, to C, with its arms l3 doubled back and forming a double clasp around the sides of O, as shown in Fig. 2. ficiently filled with writing, are slipped, one by one or several at a time, under the doubled ends 13 B by which they are held securely, as indicated by A A in Fig. 2. The book-mark M is used in the ordinary manner.
As has been said, the drawings show my de vice applied to longitudinally-opening books;
The blank pages A A, when sufbut by omitting one of the arms B it can be applied to laterally-opening books.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a bookleaf holder composed of a thin plate of springy material or substance, having the arms BB doubled back upon themselves and adapted to be secured to a book cover, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the book-cover C, the thin plate B, of springy material, having the strip 13, provided with eyelet holes b b, and the strip B with the extremities B B doubled back. upon themselves, and the fastenings R R, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth and described.
2-3. The combination of the book-cover O, the thin plate B, of springy material, having the strip 13, provided with eyelet-holes b b, and the strip B with the extremities B B doubled back upon themselves, the fastenings R R, and the book-mark M, constructed as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1890.
WILLIAM G. MARTINEAU.
In presence of FRED E. WADHAMs, GEORGE LANYER.
