Description
. following is a full, clear, and exact description UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
G. W. HAWK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED CARRIAGE, CHAIR, AND CRADLE COMBINED.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 43,206. dated June 21, 1864.
T0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, G. W. HAWK, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Baby Carriage, Chair, and Cradle; and I do hereby declare th at the thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
In the said drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention arranged as a carriage. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, arranged as a box-chair. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reverse side of the chairtop, used also for the rockers to lthe cradle; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the cradle.
Similar letters in the diiferent figures denote the same parts of my invention.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the parts of the carriage and chair-top that the same may be used either as a carriage, chair, or cradle, by a simple and appropriate adjustment or arrangement of the said parts, as hereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and make use ot' my invention, I will now proceed to describe the same with particularity, reference being made to the aforesaid drawings.
A represents the carriage-top, which may be constructed and attached in any suitable and convenient manner, so that it may be readily removed when required.
B and C represent the sides of the body of the carriage, which are constructed in two parts, as shown, connected by the pivot a, upon which C is adjustable, turning up as shown in Fig. 2.
D is the removable axle, which can readily be taken out by removing one of the wheels b, and detaching a catch attached to the inside of B, which fits into a slot-in D to prevent the same from sliding in its supports when in use.
E represents the carriage-seat, which is pivoted at the rear end, and provided with a swinging support at the front, (marked G), so that when said support is swung back under the seat the latter falls down into the position shown in Fig. 4.
H is a kind of false bottom to the carriage and serves as an extra seat for the carriage, l
and also as thc bottom of the chair, as seen in Fig. 2. v
. F represents a circulir top to the chair and is provided with the round hole N, above which the head and arms ot' the baby rise, and is also provided with the raised rim f, to prevent the playthin gs and such matters from rolling or falling off. This chair top or table is provided with suitable attachments, d, to`
fasten it to the chair as shown. This chair-top F is constructed in three parts, K L M, united together by means of the hinges e, and catches or buttons It, and dowels m, in such a manner that by turning the buttons the two parts L and M open upward from the center to a vertical position, thus supporting the platform K upon two semicircular rockers, upon which the carriage-body B C is placed, and the seat E adjusted, as shown in Fig. 4, thus converting the same into a cradle, l being slots in the rockers, which slip over pins projecting from the sides of the cradle, stead yin g and keeping said rockers and the entire arrangement in place.
In Fig. 2, I` represents a standard projecting forward at the top, to which is suspended the circular revolving device J, which consists of a set of radially-arranged arms, from the ends of which various toys may be suspended by cords, which the child can readily v grasp, and as the device revolves new toys are continually being presented.
The same vdevice may be attached to the cradle at the front or foot, as shown, or at the head; or it may be used as the frame to attach a canopy or top to the carriage, instead of the top A. On the cradle it may be used to suspend a canopy or mosquito-net, or may have the toys attached, as before described.
When it is desired to convert the carriage into the chair, the top A is removed and laid aside, and the tongue or handle c removed, the same being attached by means of a hook at its rear end, and a loop projecting from the bottom of thecarriage, or in any other suitable manner. One of the wheels then being removed from the axle, and the catch before mentioned withdrawn from the slot therein, the axle is removed and laid aside. The part C is then turned up, a-s shown in Fig. 2, the extra seat H, forming the bottom of the chair, keeping the air out. The top F, with its attachment J, is then adjusted upon said chair,
`should it be necessary.
coming just under the childs arms, and fastened by the hooks d, or in any other suitable manner.
When it is desiredto convert the chair into a cradle, the top F is removed and the part G turned down. F is then arranged as before described and placed beneath the body of the cradle, the seat E arranged as shown, form` ing, with H and the bottom of O, the bottom ofthe cradle. One end of the platform K is wider than the other, thereby making the notch in the rockers of suitable Width to fit closely to the body of cradle, one end of which, it will be observed, is, in consequence of the arrangement of B and G, wider than the other.
If preferred, the chair-top F may be of an oval shape, in which case the rockers will be of an elliptical or oval form instead of circular, as shown.
The hole N should he made of such size as will prevent the child from falling or crawling out from the chair, so that there will be no danger of leaving him by himself for a While, Said hole may be made adjustable, to adaptit to the changing size of the child, by means of an apron or slide or some other equivalent device.
Having described my invention, I will noviT proceed to specify What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Constructing the body of the carriage of two parts, B and C, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes speciled and shown.
2. The combination of the rockers L M With the platform K, constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purposes delineated and described.
3. The combination of the parts B C with the chair-top F, provided With the hole N, arranged and operating as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
4. lhe combination of the chair B C, the top F, and revolving arms J, as and for the purposes shown and described.
e. vv. HAWK.
